View Full Version : How much do you walk your dog
Birth-Peace 02-05-2008, 19:51 How much do you walk your dog?
And how big is it? I know some people think that smaller dogs don't really need walking that much.
I have two shihtzus and they both get a forty minute walk a day, off lead.
I think the little one wouldn't mind if he didn't get a walk daily but goodness me, Bailey goes mad if I'm a little late for his walk.
So what sort of dog do you have and how often do you walk them and for how long?
Molly usually gets a least an hour if it's a walk and until she stops chasing if we're out for a ball or frisbee throwing session (which is typically about 45 minutes). She also gets short walks first thing in the morning and last thing at night and whenever else she can persuade us that she wants to go out.
Mine are both Shih Tzus and they have at least 45 mins and sometimes go on longer walks off the lead. They are both happy to walk that far and come back home and start playing.
Sometimes they go out in the afternoon for a short walk but they are not bothered if they dont and will play in the garden or in the house.
*Wallace* 02-05-2008, 20:17 It all depends really on the weather and other things but me and Snoop had 2 hour in Meersbrook Park today,

And with a couple of doggie pals he met,

Mine is a Boxer. She nips out in the morning and I take her for a long walk in the day. She sometimes goes out in the evening for another if my husband goes jogging. She really runs around and is never restless at home so I think she does ok. There's the occasional day when I can't manage and I feel so guilty.
Birth-Peace 02-05-2008, 20:32 We had a good run (well they did, I generally stood and watched them whizz around, but about to give birth so allowed) this evening on Loxley field and both boys are now fast asleep and flat on the floor :)

That's the great thing about having 2- they wear each other out. I love it when mine starts having a chase with another dog I'm like- yeah job done!
Badger and Mojo get a let out first thing then get walked with some of the other dogs we walk they get 3-4hours daily and probably 2 at a weekend plus the let oputs and trips to the field, they constantly play with each other.
When I dogsit, 20 mins in the morning, 40 in the evening, several 5 minutes down the field.
Weimeraner.
mine have anything between 2 and 3 hours each a day, split into 2 walks each so at least 4 walks a day having 6 dogs. A few of them also get to go on my dog walks with clients dogs so can add another hour or so each on to that, thats the joy of my job that all my dogs get very well exercised throughout the day. Theres non of that 2x 20min walks for my greyhounds lol. anna.x.

Completely agree, they are super at tiring themselves out. Today we had the added bonus of two ducks that Petie was trying to play with but the big meanies kept flying away.
Petie loves playing with big dogs too.
fox20thc 02-05-2008, 21:56 well me and the pooch have been busy bonding. Worked out that excluding here throwing herself around in the park and the house, we are doing about three and a half mile walk a day over three sessions... I'm knackered... she unfortunately isn't and just woke up
robwillow 02-05-2008, 22:16 Mine get 1 1/4 a day.
Living in the Peak we do a lot of hill and rock walking and our dog does too, she goes everywhere with us and to say she's only a shih tzu she is very robust and will face any challenge she comes up against with a great determination. If she can't get up a rock or a very steep hill she will always find another way round. She usually beats us to the top and sits there waiting probably thinking 'what a load of slow coaches I have here'.
Here's just a few of her walks she goes on .. some go on for hours and she rarely tires, unlike us ...
