Like ^^ he says, then click the startup tab, and seledct or deselect as you wish.

Sometimes you won't get a good description of what a program is, but just google the filename and you'll get a description. :)

Start menu>run> in the run box print in "msconfig" click OK choose and click on startup tab untick any programs you dont need to run but be careful which you choose as some should not be unticked, then restart computer for changes to take effect. If it is just Msn Msngr you want to turn off I use this little program that allows you to turn on/off as needed.

It does but could be a little dangerous in the hands of a novice. I usually steer people to Startup Control Panel http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

If you want to know what each of the startup programs does and if it is safe to turn them off (or just better to turn them off) then this site has an index of thousands of startup programs and what they do. Some of these may be remnants from applications you have installed and deleted and some may be the result of virus attacks

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm

With a bit of suitable disabling of useless startup programs your machine should start quicker.
