Just goes to show how unimportant the UEFA Cup has become if the final's to be contested by little-known teams from minor countries. If they want the competition to be taken seriously, maybe they should scrap the pointless group games and the admission of sides knocked out of the Champions League.
When even Bolton Wanderers would rather field a reserve team and get knocked out than make it to the final, it must be obvious that reaching the final is little or no achievement!

Yes Basil - I'm sure Bayern really just couldnt be bothered to beat Zenit because of the possiblity of embarrasment of getting into the final.

Little known? Rangers? If I didnt know you were just trolling i'd be offended by your stupidity.

None of the teams you mentioned have made it to the final. Likewise, on a European scale, both Zenit St Petersburg and Rangers are relatively little-known teams; one has never won a European trophy, the other hasn't won one since 1972. Therefore I'm still correct!

They gave us a hiding that's for sure. They may be "little known" but they have a fantastic team.
Even given that we had an off day they ran rings round us last night and we had players of the quality of Toni,Ribery,Lucio,Kahn,Van Bommel,Klose,Lahm and Schweinsteiger out there.Frightening!

They have also just started their season and are very fresh,we,like Rangers are coming to the end of a long hard season and it shows.

Pograbynak will miss the final but Arshavin and the two full backs will return from suspension.
At least we've done the double in Germany by way of consolation!

The fact that Russia have been in the finals of 4 European Championships which is more than any of the above mentioned with players from RUSSIAN LEAGUE TEAMS surely implies that the Russian league is NOT minor or crap or rubbish

It implies nothing of the sort. Of the 54 Championships in the Soviet Top League's history, just four teams carved up 43 championships between them. Of those four, three (Dynamo Kiev, Spartak Moscow, and Dynamo Moscow) had 36 championships, and 33 runners up spots between them.

Hardly strength in depth, is it?

And you're floundering around, waffling on about the performance of national sides in international competition, which has nothing to do with club football at all.

Going back to Rangers, 10 of the 27 players with squad numbers aren't from Scotland. Over a third of the squad can't enhance the Scottish national side.

Are you getting the picture now?

By the same token, looking over the history of the UEFA Cup finalists' home country's records in European competition, these statistics come up.

Scotland

3 wins - 2 Cup Winner's Cups, and a European Cup
6 finalists* - 2 CWC runners up, 2 UEFA Cup runners up, 1 EC runner up.

Russia

4 wins - 3 CWCs, 1 UEFA Cup.
2 finalists* - 1 CWC runner up.

* includes this year's UEFA Cup final's teams.

Not much difference really, is there?
