So, I'm a bit of a geek....I watch foreign films, have an extensive film collection, read SF/Fantasy books, watch anime and have a wide music collection.

So, are you a geek too?

I'm a bit of a geek, I'm a computing degree, its pretty much given that were all geeks... even if I do listen to rock and metal and enjoy a good pi$$-up rather than watching star wars

but I do watch anime, and I do read sci-fi and fantasy books, and I do like sci-fi movies... and I love my gadgets and stuff

Wouldn't the 'Star Wars' jibe be more appropriate if it said: 'Star Trek' ?

I think Star Trek is alot more geekier than Star wars - with so many thousands of episodes etc . . Star Wars is cool  . . . . . .oh oh . . . do I sound geeky saying that!? :o

I always consider Star Wars to be more of a student type film, and Star Trek is extremely geeky. Seems the geeks have the last laugh though, they mostly end up making lots of money... Ah well, I guess i'm happy being broke but able to get a date. :)

I started out as a biochemist (fairly geeky) and am now a bioinformatician (more geeky) and getting really interested in AI and semantic information processing (really geeky) oh and I love sci-fi - should I just go and buy a pocket protector now?

I know a lot of geeks who did engineering or sciences...

What makes you a geek though?

I've got an a-level in Film Studies, I'm involved in a lot of 'film related' things, I write screenplays for various things, and I'm involved in a lot of film related things.

I can't stand Hollywood films and I prefer independent cinema and foreign cinema, and I've got over £3000 of DVD's. Does that make me a geek? I don't feel like one!

I would have thought that the only thing in there that makes you a geek is knowing how much your DVD's are worth. :)

I know more self-confessed geeks who are into rock and metal than those who queue for Star Wars and go to conventions. Of course, many of them like Star Wars (well, the original 3 anyway), but I do find that the metal + pi$$-up geek is far more prevalent in Sheffield.

Had to insure them when I went to Uni because the Uni insurance policy only covers me up to £500! Took me ages working out the price of them all via hmv.co.uk! There's no way I'm letting some noggin take my dvd collection while I'm at home over christmas or easter!!

I'm a food and wine geek - I get excited about a bottle of wine, a great chef's knife or a new Le Creuset pan. My girlfriend thinks I'm very sad.

I'm glad it's not just me that gets over excited about cook wear. I bough a Creuset wok a couple of weeks ago (Alders going bust was a godsent for me) and we had nothing but stir-fry for the next 4 days so I could play with it. I'm looking at a pasta maker next. I still look for any excuse to use the mixer.

It's shut down, they were selling the fixtures and fittings last week.
I think some of the shops have been sold to other companies, but most have just shut.

I heard on the grapevine it's been sold to Primark. I'm with you on the pasta maker idea Nick - you going to get the attachment for your Kitchenaid? I've been looking at getting some of those recently. I'd quite like the juicer attachment and the pasta maker too.

ps: I also have a thing for Global knives.... I'm such a geek....

They do a pasta mangle thingy for the Kitchenaid ?
Cool, but won't it go realy fast and drag you in ?

Do you watch the UKFood channel Jon ?, there was a brilliant woman on last night who does cooking courses in a castle in Scotland, she was so funny saying "These longustine have been stunned, they won't feel a thing, you have to be humane", but they were clearly very alive and un-stunned as she pulled their heads off.

Yeah they do. You can control the speed with your speed lever. I don't know as to whether it will drag you in but I doubt it.

Funny you should mention that about the Langoustines - I've been cooking live lobster this weekend (I had a dinner party) and a lot of people were saying to me they thought it was a bit cruel (they did, however eat and enjoy the lobster!?) But it did make me think about how humane the process is. Sadly lobster is one of those things that unfortunately tastes better if cooked alive. If cooked when dead the intestines release lots of toxins into the flesh which is highly dangerous and damages the taste. I've always cooked my lobsters live but it made me think so I went away and did some research. Apparently, the lobster does not have a brain to speak of (like a lot of invertebrates) and as such cannot register pain.
When you drop a live lobster into boiling water the tail does thrash (so put the lid on quick) but this is purely an autonomic response and not a response to pain. But do I think cooking lobster live is wrong? Truth be told I find the whole concept of killing animals for meat is a bit cruel but I don't think about it. That's how I can still eat (and enjoy) things like Foie Gras, Lobster and other shellfish. She may have stunned the Langoustines Nick but they wouldn't have felt anything anyway.

So I guess I'm saying I don't have a problem with it but would understand if others did.

I always think it's a good idea to get shellfish alive, it's the only way you know it's fresh.

I have got a bit of a problem with boiling crabs and lobsters because that are so big I think they must be intelligent, anything smaller I don't have a problem with, mussels don't seem to have much idea whats going on.

Apparently a lobster's nervous system is nearly identical to a grasshoppers Nick which we'd both agree doesn't have a brain.

I check out the forum everyday and I like to read Harry Potter books. I also dislike HollyWood films- prefer Irish and Australian instead. Together with an interest in history and no interest in football I think I am definately a geek.

Geeks often get a bad rap. But to be a geek is about loving something so much that it clearly radiates to others, and in today's cynical world; that can only ever be a good thing.

Also, I’ve done film degrees too and I’m a very big film geek, and I’ve always found the difference between a ‘film geek’ and a ‘film buff/snob’ is thus....

A film geek will always start by telling you what films they love

while:

A film buff will always start by telling you which films they hate.

Try it yourself and you’ll see I’m right.......

How come someone who obsesses over football is normal but someone who obsesses over an more scientific / artistic / literate persuit is a geek?

Slightly sweeping I know but theres a point in there amoung the hyperbole!

more like a statto type (which is a geek). When you start spouting random useless facts whilst watching a game you know you have a problem :D

I thought a geek was someone in their mid thirties or older who went train spotting? Or is that an anorak? Can an anorak become a geek though?

I think you're whatever kind of geek you want to be. :)

But if you're still not sure there are always plenty of online tests such as this one:
