Arriving tomorrow at cinemas across the Uk is the latest comic book character from the Marvel stable to hit the big screen - Iron Man. It also marks the first film that Marvel Studios have financed and made themselves - in the past it has been Fox, Sony, etc who have made the films, now they just distribute them. Marvel recently bought back the rights to their properties (a mad burst of selling in the 80s led to a lot of rights issues), and with them having all control over the films it means that we can look forward to some crossovers between films over the coming years....
...but on with Iron Man. I watched it this morning and, speaking as a self confessed comic-book-geek, I can say I thoroughly enjoyed it. The cast were perfectly suited to their roles, from Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark, to Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts. The story built nicely, remaining faithful enough to the comics that spawned it, and the action was stunning. The mix of man-in-a-suit effects and CGI is almost seamless, and it is nigh on impossible to work out where one ends and another begins at times.
Plenty of in jokes and references are scattered throughout for the Marvel obsessives to look out for (including the obligatory Stan Lee appearance), and the film plays well as a great opener to the franchise (and to the summer season). Geeks and freaks will get the most out of the film, but that isn't to say that it isn't a cracking good actioner in its own rights.
With regards to the aformentioned possible crossovers.....all I am going to say is to stick around until after the end credits for a much rumoured cameo which hints at a future project from Marvel Studios.
