View Full Version : Who remembers Shirecliffe Homes?
creaghan 27-03-2005, 22:12 Does anyone remember the homes in shirecliffe it was where you'd be sent if you got into any trouble or continually wagged it from school! "I spent 9 Months there" at the time it seemed like an eternity I was 15 and in my last year of school. was any of you in there? do you know anyone who was? the age group of the kids was 11-16 I think it closed about1988? not exactly sure . would be great to know how some of the staff are or how some of the residents are now.
i remember it well.
a friends boyfriend spent a fair few months in and out of it.his name was neil, not sure if i can put his surname on.it was around 1981ish.
PaulTansley 28-03-2005, 10:03 A mate of mine was always in and out of there.
I once went to see him.
His name is Vaughan, better not give his second name.
rubydazzler 28-03-2005, 10:13 gawd I need a new brain or something hehe - I read that and thought it was going to be a spoof on a Victorian detective story!

I was there at the same time "1981ish" and there were two neils, one was short "and a bit rounded" (chubby) and the other was from firth park and he went to hinde house school, The latter, after a visit from his freinds dove through the front door glass window in a sucsessful atempt to escape, he nearly severed his thumb whilst doing it! I remained in touch with this neil, and he became a good mate. However I moved to cardiff some 17 years ago and have lost touch with him.
think its probaly the second neil ,surname begins with H.some of the stuff you describe I remember him doing. If memory serves me right he jumped through the window to go and meet said girlfriend in woods at the side of the hospital.I know he spent some time in Durham,as he wrote a few letters from there.
If its the same one ,he had 2 sisters, the eldest of which I saw recently and she said he was well and had settled down wife, kids and all that

It's the same Neil H, he did move to durham in about 1980 but he came back, before we were in shirecliffe we shared the same Class in Hinde house for about three years " X2". Untill Neil got expelled and sent to firth Park. Great to hear he's Ok and settled.
I knew Neil via firth park youth club/firth park school .
did you ever go to the youth club it was in whats now the car park?
creaghan 28-03-2005, 18:27 No I never went to the youth centre, however I did attend the attendance centre at firth park School for a number of weeks on a saturday afternoon. I lived in Brightside (Castledine Gardens) but I know lots of people from the Firth Park area.

millsands 26-08-2008, 17:58 i used to share a double dorm with a guy called steven i will not say his surname but begins with H. alsdo does anyone remember when a black guy called danny tried to get out of the secure dorm round hole in the window and they had to have the fire brigade out to cut the extra strong plastic while he was held up as he was stiuck fast ?
Mr Wooton was a great character i wonder if anyone remembers his red hand gang? The secure dorm had a door leading to the big dorm which was locked at lights out. One night we were able to slip the lock from the large dorm side, a kid called crog (i think) went into the secure side and we locked him in. That night mr Wooton was on nights and when he checked the big dorm he noticed one missing i presume he thought it was an escape. However he looked in the secure dorm and crog was sat on the toilet (it had its own) claiming he had been there since before lights out (about an hour prior) Mr Wooton was miffed as he was 100% sure crog was in the big dorm at lights out . Was Baxter the one who smoked a pipe?.

I also seen Mcquade a few years ago drinking in the Blackstock pub.
