Anybody had a play with the Firefox 3 (beta 5)?

Have been giving it a go although can't honestly say I've noticed a lot of difference over 2.

Not yet, but I'd be interested in hearing opinions...

Seriously?!

It's lots faster, lower memory footprint, lots of noticable changes like the URL bar, download bar, bookmarks manager etc.

Only current thing for me is some extensions haven't been updated yet otherwise it's great :)

Running it on Linux alongside Opera and it's fine, behaving itself so far :)

If you're going to use it make sure you disable your extensions as they could be the cause. Been using it on ebay, facebook etc with no problems :)

Firefox = overrated.

IE FTW, been using it for years with little to no problems.

I've been using firefox since it was called Phoenix and this is the first time i've run a new version and gone "eeurgh" at what i've seen.

I don't like the new "look" at all. That big back button is horrible, though i see why they've done it (Back is used a lot more than Forward). Does anyone know if there's a theme to make FF3 look more like FF2?

I don't really like the new look of the drop-down address bar... there's too much info in there. I much prefer just a list of addresses - why do i need the site's page titles, URL and favicon??

On the positive side, it does seem quicker and hopefully the memory leaks are gone...

I don't know if there are any themes to make it look like ff2 yet but to get rid of the big back button, right click on the navigation toolbar then select customize. tick the use small icons and that will give more conventional back button

In the mean time try this:

Open a new tab. Type "about:config" without quotes into the address bar and hit enter/click Go.

2. Right-click anywhere, select New, then Integer. In the dialog prompt that appears, type:

browser.cache.memory.capacity

3. Click OK. Another dialog prompt will appear. This is where you decide how much memory to allocate to Firefox. This depends on how much RAM your computer has, but generally you don't want to allocate too little (under 8MB), but if you allocate too much, you might as well not do this. A good recommended setting is 16MB. If you want 16MB, enter this value into the dialog prompt:

16384

(Why 16384 instead of 16000? Because computers use base-12 counting. Thus 16 megabytes = 16384 bytes. Likewise, if you want to double that and allocate 32MB, you'd enter 32768.)

4. Click OK to close the dialog box, then close all instances of Firefox and restart. If your Firefox still uses the same amount of memory, give it a few minutes and it should slowly clear up. If that fails, try a system reboot.

I don't really want small icons - just rid of the giant back button, but i guess that'll have to do for now. Thanks.

No joy with getting the address bar to just show URLs either (rather than the URL, Page title and favicon)... i had a look in the about:config settings but couldn't see anything obvious. :(

(Because computers use base-12 counting.)

Actually, they don't, they use binary (base 2), or hexidecimal (base 16)

16Mb = 16,384 because

1Kb = 1024 bytes (10000000000 in binary or 400 in Hex)
1Mb = 1024 Kb (100000000000000000000 in binary or 100000 in Hex)

therefore 16Mb = 16 x 1024 = 16,384 bytes

This post = what has it got to do with this thread, its about "Have you tried Firefox 3" not "Lets moan about any version of Firefox cause I love Microsoft"

Trolling again I see. :P

Anyway, on topic, I am looking forward to V3, not tried it yet, might download it over the weekend.
