After watching and thoroughly enjoying the film "Ronin" last night, I thought I'd start a thread on films that have 'Atmosphere'.

By atmosphere I mean when something's gripped you and pulled you into a film, but you're not quite sure what it is that's fascinated you so much. Almost as if the atmosphere itself is an extra character.

Just a few that come to mind:

"Ronin'
"Blade Runner"
"The Third Man"
"Shadows and Fog"
"The Big Easy"
"The Shining"
"The Ipcress File"

Any others?

Alien - all four films have atmosphere that not only has you sat on the edge of your sofa biting your nails but keeps you hypnotised to the screen!

Great choices, Lestat

I thought about including 'Aliens' myself, but my list was just getting too long!

'Night of the Demon' left quite an impression on me, - but perhaps because it was my first horror film.

What about 'The Exorcist' or 'An American Werewolf in London' the scene in the tube station scared me out of my skin for years after seeing it!

Greybeard,

I love 'Night of the Demon' - the story it's based on, 'Casting the Runes' is probably one of the best horror / ghost stories in the English language.

Might I add :

Quatermass and the Pit
Barry Lyndon
Duel
The Draughtsman's Contract
