Hi, wondered if there are any technical people out there who will be able to help me??

I'm trying to run the repair console from my windows setup disk and it asks me for an administrator password. I have no idea what the password is. Is there any way I can find out, bearing in mind I cannot currently access windows (hence the recovery console!)

Thank you

Have you tried just hitting "enter" or typing in "administrator or admin"? Sometimes it is just left blank.

If you can get into safe mode I think you can disable the "administrator password" via the registry....just can't remember which key it is.

hi

you may have to remove it via taking out the motherboards battery and putting your 2 fingers on it

this will make the battery become dead with loss of life then if you hold it for about 5 seconds then if you place the battery back in the motherboard all the cmos/bios and any other passwords will now be removed

hope this helps

Once you set it up you wont be prompted for a password.

That's just for the BIOS. It won't help with the Windows passwords!

If you can access via safe mode and feel confident (if you don't then leave well alone) with editing the registry try this.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\Setup\Recovery
Console
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1

You could always use Ophcrack (http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/) to burn a CD, which can be booted from to recover the admin password:thumbsup:

Have you tried just hitting enter.

The default password is blank, so when you're prompted for a password just press enter.

Edit:Sorry, already been suggested, must learn to read posts before I post.

I was a little sceptical, but it does it's job.

But I did a scan on an olde 800Mhz celery, and the PW was found within 4 minutes:).

He's assuming that the OS can be started in safe mode.

Would be nice to access system restore from dos though.

Yes he was. I was been just a teeny bit sarcastic. :) I removed it from XP The time when it was needed it rarely ever worked.

I remember when you could talk to the computer through dos.

Got Windows 98se to boot to desktop just by typing sys c:

Also you could edit the Boot.ini file and copy to a floppy disk.

Got Windows working again on many occasions.

That's been my experience as well, just when you need it it lets you down.
Many times i've wanted to restore only to find the earliest restore point is the current day.

Fat lot of use that is, I usually go for the repair option in windows setup.
It zaps the windows folder but leaves your programme files intact at least.

I use Acronis, never failed me (including bare metal) in over 100 restores.
