View Full Version : Which area of Sheffield might suit us best?
Loopgarou 24-04-2008, 08:27 My girlfriend and I are making the move from the Costa del Sol to Sheffield in July.
We're both musicians/teachers and are ideally would like to rent a property that was close enough to the city to walk, or at least have good public transport links.
We would like to be around some signs of life, although not right in the heart of a student area.
Do you live in Crookes, Hunters Bar or Hillsborough? What are these areas like?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It all boils down to what you can afford, all of these areas would fit the bill, good links to town, reasonable neighbourhoods with decent shopping and social life. Hillsborough is the least studenty of the three. Other areas to consider might be Meersbrook and Walkley. Best come to the city and take a good look, only you know what will appeal to you.
Good Luck
neeeeeeeeeek 24-04-2008, 09:05 I can never understand why Hillsborough is regarded as a nice area, it's got a few crappy shops, it's not walking distance from town and traffic is a nighmare. I agree with Meersbrook or Walkley might be better suited. Crookes and Hunters Bar are very studenty.
ellielambert 24-04-2008, 13:57 Hi,
I am a young professional and I live in Hunters Bar and would definitely recommend it. There's a lovely mix of shops and pubs, it has great bus links to town but I tend to walk most of the time as it is a pleasant walk and is close enough. The cost of living / rent is fairly reasonable and it isn't actually that studenty. I lived in Crookes for three years and it is far more studenty and there aren't as many facilities. Walkley is lovely but again there are not as many amenities as there is Ecclesall way.
Hope that helps
Loopgarou 24-04-2008, 15:22 Cheers GHS, we will have a good look round but we can't get over until we move from Spain so this info is very helpful.
I spent some of my childhood in Hillsborough, but only getting soaked in the cop at the football!
We'll check out Hunters Bar Ellie, sounds very promising!
fabulous_girl 25-04-2008, 10:54 Heeley/Meersbrook are nice- since moving from manor i can walk into work in town everyday- but there are buses for when the weathers bad..which is a lot! can we swap!?
espadrille 25-04-2008, 20:46 Crookes is not so studenty now as a lot of landlords are selling up due to the mass migration of students down to the student villages.I would therefore recommend Crookes to you and then you could be one of my neighbours.

My advice would be to stay there! Costa or Sheff? Daddy or chips? hmmm

Venables; all these constant blue skies and sitting around in orange tree squares drinking chilled beer is not all what it's cracked up to be. You have the beach to fit in, trips into the country (the cost of cheap petrol!) and when are you going to fit in a swim in the pool?
No, Sheffield, especially living next door to espadrille, looks a much rosier prospect. Can't wait.
Ian Goodwin 26-04-2008, 09:37 Hi We're a small family run letting agency with a few city centre properties for rent with prices from £500.00 per month. We let to a good mix of post grads and young professionals (non-smokers only) and the trend certainly seems to be a drift from Crookes/Walkley to the centre. Butcher Works on Arundel Street has proved very popular and we currently have a vacancy there from 1 July. White Croft Works in S3 might suit as well - a new build with a bit of character and close to City Centre/Kelham Island. Have a look at the website if you're interested and happy to answer any queries. Big day for the Owls too if you've still an interest in Wednesday - My son and I have suffered there for the home games this season...
nickyboyzuk 30-04-2008, 11:05 I agree with Espradrille. Crookes is good and has a good bus service in to the city. Plenty of property to let and for sale due to the crunch and students moving in to town.
Sheffette 09-05-2008, 06:12 I live in Meersbrook and it's great for being close to town but close to the main routes out into the peak district. It's a bit of a bohemian area, served by some nice restaurants / cafes, health food store, and close to Woodseats and to Nether Edge which has some cute little shops now, including an art gallery.
Also, I think there's a rule in Meersbrook that says you have to be a teacher to live here, or at least know about five to be accepted :) All our mates round here seem to be teachers.
TritonX100 09-05-2008, 08:31 I second Espradrille and nickyboyzuk posts, more professionals/first time home buyers moving into the area. Crookes great place to live! I would recommend visiting the different areas, u'll soon get a feeling for what areas you will like.
espadrille 10-05-2008, 05:40 Just wondering whether you will rent or buy and if you are buying, what kind of budget you will have.Check out Blundells website they are the biggest local estate agent and are usually good at valuations. It is quite a good time to buy as the property is reasonable, though you will pay a premium for being near all the facilities, uni, hospitals and 20 mins walk in to town.Bus service is good also.
CrazyDaisy 11-05-2008, 10:06 I live at Crookes too, and I can recommend it here!
It depends whereabouts in Crookes you live as to where the majority of students are. The road that I'm on has very few student houses.
Best rule of thumb IMO is, if you can imagine walking along the main road at Crookes - aptly called just Crookes! - the roads that slope downwards (towards Walkley) have more student houses than the roads that slope upwards (towards the Bolehills).
If that makes sense!
Also depends on why your making the move...intention to settle? Kids? etc..
Ive found that nether green, hangingwater area has a real village feel to it...very communal with lotsa little shops...and school catchment is prob the best in Sheff...considering on average Sheff is very low in the national leagues.
Endcliffe park a min walk with the peak district only 10 mins in the car.
Overall? You can't beat it here. Greenest city prob in the UK..i've lived all over inc other countries and always end up back....and i'm a Londoner!
Nether Edge is pretty good - it's 15-20 minutes walk into town. London rd and abbeydale road have loads of restaurants, buses and taxis. There's a wide range of different areas in Nether Edge depending on your taste; streets like Sheldon Road are where the students live, you've got plenty of more quiet posh roads if you can afford the rents, and if you like it more gritty there's empire road and the like. Broadfiled is a good mix pub (some students, locals, quiet drinkers etc), Bar Abbey etc. 24 hour Spa, loads of take aways.
brianthedog 30-05-2008, 10:06 Yeah - Nether Edge or Hunters Bar. Both quite young and vibrant. Nether Edge in particular as it's nearer to London Road which is great for good pubs and restaurants and has a much younger and cooler feel to it.

You said it!-ive lived in Coventry for the last 25 Years and its been like one hell of a bad dream after living in Lodge Moor for 9 years when i was growing up !! i hope to move back next year and take my partner with me !
Loopgarou 08-07-2008, 10:11 Cheers good people of S.Yorkshire.
We've made it over and it's somehow seems different to the Costa Del Sol. I can't quite put my finger on why.
We were out looking around the new flats developments around the Leadmill and had a good walk around Hunters Bars which seemed like a good place to be.
Off out again now to look a bit further afield.....................
HarrietStar 08-07-2008, 15:42 I live in Hillsborough at the moment but have also lived in broomhill and hunters bar. All three are fine for what you want, they all have good public transport links to town and train station and a good mix of shops. Broomhill is fairly studenty and quite expensive. Hunters Bar is more trendy and slightly cheaper. Hillsborough is much cheaper in comparison but not as trendy, although more young professionals do seem to be moving in. I'd say you should be looking at hunters bar/nether edge if you can afford it.
Welcome back to not so sunny sheffield!
Have a look at the old Nether Edge Hospital site and around there, there are some very nice properties and a gym and stuff on site. We used to live on Clifford Road just of Pslater Lane in a flat and loved it. Easy to walk to Sharrow Vale and ecclesal road but not in the middle of the student area. Also around there are some slightly older more traditonal stone built flats and building conversions rather than the brand spanking new high rise developments.
Good luck with the house hunting.
