It is free from today. I doubt if I will be installing due to selling my PC and using NOD32 on my laptop.

Correct me if I am wrong, but AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0 is not the same as AVG AntiVirus 8.0.

Simply means that AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0 is now available.
Not that AVG AntiVirus 8.0 is now free.

... or tell me that AVG is wrong when they say that they are different.

Sorry, foxy.

I had a similar problem in one of the earlier changes of version and have stuck with the old one since.

It still does the basic job, updates daily etc. without the bells and whistles.

All I got was a blank screen, so I rebooted and got the same again.
I never uninstall any software....I use Acronis and was up and running in 2minutes. :) :P

It can be removed unistalled in the normal way through CCleaner if you have that installed. If that fails use safe mode.

I just installed it on this Vista machine and it refused to uninstall the old AVG 7.5 which it said it would and I got an intsallation error. I had to reboot and remove 7.5 manually and then reinstall 8 and even then it wouldnt have it. It finally installed at the third attempt along with its crappy link scanner function.

Did you not get your username and password via an email from NOD?
I would contact them and they will send it to you.

My system drive is about 6GB - but...find the CD, load it in the drive, reboot and wait for Acronis to load = 2 minutes. Restore system and reboot = 3 minutes.

Total = 5

From a cold start 5 minutes would be an a fair assumption. :)

Restart> F11 is a little quicker.

At least with Acronis you get a nice clean uninstall and 5 minutes is such a short time to wait to be up and running again. ;)

I was taking a leaf out of your lads book "mines bigger than your" If you know what I mean. :)

Actually it wasn't anything to do with who's was faster, just how we had a difference in the way we calculated the time of restoring the system using Acronis (version 11) :hihi:

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

I've had the paid for version of AVG Internet Security Suite ( Version 8 ) now for around 6 weeks but the free one has just been released.

AVG Antivirus 8 is not exactly the same as AVG Free because the paid for version now includes full antivirus and antispyware/anti root-kit all together whereas the free one is just antivirus I believe.

The new paid for version of AGVIS is great, it runs quickly and never slows the system down so I'm sure that is the same for the free version too!

Version 7.5 is free. Version 8 that you had to pay for has been released from TODAY for free

I think you may have got it wrong Alan, and cgksheff is correct.

There are 2 versions of AVG 8.0

One is the free version which is now being offered, and the other is the paid for version 8.
You are NOT in fact now getting something for free, that you previously had to pay for.
What you are getting is a trimmed and stripped down version of the paid for AVG 8

Essentially all it is is an update of AVG 7.5 Free edition.

the only part of version 8 is the first 30 days you will all find out that it is a free trial but it does is only give you 30 days free
