Hi, can anyone help please.

I run a website ( mysite.orange etc ) and use terrapin ftp to upload my files, my files used to take seconds to upload and i had no problems whatsoever.
Last year i purchased a belkin Modem/Router and i seem to think this is when the problem started, i would try to upload a page and find that it would stop on 6kb, after about 30 seconds the rest of the file would upload. I could find nothing to alter this and as 30 seconds wasn't long thought little of it.

I have now purchased a new computer and the problem has got worse ... a lot worse, when i try to upload a file now it freezes on 8kb for around a minute or more, then it goes to 12kb, 18kb, 24kb etc with at least a minutes wait inbetween, so an 80kb file takes around 12 minutes to upload.

I have searched for answers as to why this is happening as it never used to but can find nothing to explain why, i am wondering if there is a setting somewhere i have missed, has anyone else had this problem?

I am using windows xp home, terrapin version 2.3.2 build 9.

Your help would be much appreciated .... Thanks

i can only think of either port forward and edit port you use in ftp software or edit dmz for the pc you are on .. ??

Thanks for answering ...

I have tried the port forward and it says in use and wants to put it through 2121, when you accept it does say in the boxes that you are on 21 ?

I also tried the dmz to allow this machine to bypass the firewall and it had no effect assuming i got the i.p address right, i found this by typing cmd in the run box and then ipconfig.

I do have three other computers using the router, could one of those be using port 21 and interfering with this connection?

You could try putting your ftp client in passive mode, then you shouldn't need to open any ports. thats what its for.

from the command line client you would type PASV ... but IIRC i think M$'s command line ftp client doesn't do passive ftp either but your full gui client probably will.
using random-wintel client i have no idea.

more on the wonders of passive ftp here.... .

You could always try some other software as a quick and easy test. There are plenty of free FTP clients available...

Hi, an update to my problem ( with help )

It seems the problem is with windows firewall, although Terrapin is listed in the exceptions it fails to upload files properly, if i turn the firewall off and back on again it works fine.
However when the computer has been re-started the problem is back until i have turned the firewall off then back on .... strange.

So i guess the question now is why is windows firewall acting this way?

Thank you again for your replies, your help was much appreciated.

P.S

I tried (PASV) but don't think the orange server supports it as nothing at all would happen.

I also tried using Filezilla but my modem/router kept modifying the port and dissconnecting.

It really has driven me up the wall this and i am grateful that, with help, i have more or less solved the problem, once again thank you.

You could disable windows firewall and use a good one... i hear COMODO is the best of the freebies.
