View Full Version : Any doctors in the house?
I was standing in the kitchen earlier today and got a very sharp pain in my chest, near the heart area. It happened as I breathed in, I had to sit down but had to take long, slow breaths as I could feel it sort of trying to happen again!!
Does anyone know what this is - Should I be worried?? I was talking to a friend about it later & he told me this exact same thing happened to him a year or so ago. He went to the doctor & was told it was nothing and most fit, young males get this from time to time!!??
:help:

Is it kind of a crushing pain in the chest?
I get this from time to time, it can be brought on as a form of indigestion.
DaBouncer, it's more like a sharp tightening of some vessel or something because once it happened, I had sort of crouched but couldn't stand up straight for abit without it hurting??
Must admit though - went to the loo & fingers crossed, touch wood etc . . it's kinda gone!
I get a random pain every so often, I think its like heart burn or something? I dunno... but mines more like someone stabbing me in the heart, hurts every time i try and breath in... but it goes after a while if i dont breath in too deep :?

Thats exactly it Xafier!! that is what it felt like . . . I get it once every blue moon - very worrying. Today's was really horrible though, proper stabbing pain. I had to take slow breaths - not too deep!!
Get some Gaviscon tablets in Lestat. Next time it happens take one. If pain goes as soon as you've chewed and swallowed it, then odds on it's heartburn. If this doesn't work, consider the doctor.
This is not just a boy thing... I get it too and I'm a laydee! I thought it might be a too-tight bra problem, but unless there's something you three aren't telling us....
its trapped wind,a good burp should sort it out
Kristian 25-03-2005, 21:27 Be really careful! I managed an out of hours doctors service for many moons, and the amount of calls that my operators would receive from people with 'bad indigestion' that turned out to be a Myocardial Infarction (heart attack) were so common!
If you're worried go see your GP. If you have any of the following symptoms, call 999! Crushing central chest pain, pain radiating down left arm and/or into jaw, lightheadedness, nausea, sweating or vomiting!

Luckily none of that Kristian! but you know how people tend to think the worst when it's something like that!! makes you more stressed out!

Glad to hear you don't seem to be on deaths door then Lestat! It's really odd, but before I did my aforementioned job, I was of the opinion that 'Joe Public' were always ringing 999 about stubbed toes and paper cuts. I honestly found the opposite to be the case; the amount of people that called their own GP (and were diverted to us) during a genuine emergency was unbelievable. It seemed to me that people have had it drummed into them not to call 999 unnecessarily so many times, lots of people are actually scared to make that call!

msbehavin 26-03-2005, 07:32 Best thing to do Lestat is to get yourself down to the docs and get it checked out. They can do some blood pressure readings, blood tests etc and should also take a note of your family history. If your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters etc have any heart probs such as angina, atrial fibrillation, heart attacks, high blood pressure etc then you are more likely yourself to also have heart problems. Might be worth asking around the family before you go see the docs.
Kristian is right tho about people being reluctant to dial 999. We have had patients coming in with pains in their chest, arms, etc, sitting patiently (and probably uncomfortably) in turn in the waiting room and then on seeing the doctor being dashed off to A&E cos they are having a heart attack and hadnt realised!!
Best not to take any risks. Docs are there to be seen so go see em!!!
If the pain gets worse when you breathe in, its likely to be a muscular pain (a heart attack is just very bad all the time apparently, isn't affected by breathing).
But the bottom line is if you ever get anything that worries you, go and see your GP, its what they're there for.
Provided he can fit you in before you die..'sometime next week'!
i have had similar pains to this...where im stood there and the pain starts and you fear to move and if you take any breaths that are too big it hurts even more...a very sharp pain in the chest and you just have to stay very still taking small breaths til it goes away. quite worrying at times!
i went to the doctors and got told i was fully fit and no problems. cheers for that doc!

You swallowed a medical dictionary Avalon? ;) They didn't train people to be doctors and nurses, just how to spot clear signs!

LOL - I dont know the difference lol! It was just the way you said "...that turned out to be a Myocardial Infarction..." you sounded like you knew what you were talking about, so i thought i'd see how much you knew!
But i do know a fair bit of Medical terminology - i DO work in the NHS! :hihi:
I wouldn't worry too much, this happens to me quite regularly, once every couple of weeks I'd say. I dunno what causes it, and would be interested to find out if there's any way I can avoid it. It's normally quite painful when it happens, but soon eases off.
Thanks for all the advice and compassion guy's! . . . feel a group hug coming on   But all those people who said they also get this pain from time to time - how many of you guy's smoke? do you think this may have something to do with it?

I get it a lot but have never touched a fag in my life....well not a cigarette anyway...:hihi:
i dont smoke..
maybe its stress? anxiety?
sparklesista 27-03-2005, 04:07 I get the exact same pain too!
I always say my hearts got stuck lol coz it feels like it's caught or something? A bit like a stitch but if you breath in too much it makes it worse.
I tend to find that if you bite the bullet and just breath in really deep it goes away.
I also thought it may of been a too tight bra problem but if men get it as well it must not be the case.
I have a heart murmur though so always thought that had something to do with it?
Maybe it would be worth getting it checked out with your GP? :)

I'd not swallowed my medical dictionary, but perhaps I had given it a small nibble... :)

I would have thought a myocardial infarction was an infact of the myocardium, personnaly i would have thought it was some cramp of the intercostal muscles in your rib cage, as they expance on inhilation. i am not a doctor though lol
