my health visitor has just been and as we were talking about Scarlett she started to doing this cramping where she gets all rigid and her face goes bright purple, she was also making a strange sound (she's been doing this since birth)

I also had to change her nappy a couple of times when the HV was here and she said her poo isn't normal, it shouldn't look they way it does, nor should she be pooing as much as she does.

She said all of this with the fact she refuses to settle makes her think she has a milk allergy (I'm allergic to milk although it just makes me have hayfever type symptoms)

She has said to see the dr at the baby clinic next week to have her sent for test but not to change the formula till it's confd.

Has anyone else had this with their lo? What was the test like?

Can't be much help I'm afraid as my GP didn't do any tests, just changed number 3 to soy milk, to see if it helped his screaming fits. They thought he was possibly lactose intolerant but it didn't help, so we switched back to normal formula. I hope everything goes ok for you tho. x

My youngest was like this, but vomiting too...she ended up in hospital. They diagnosed lactose intolerance and eventually put her on soya milk (cow and gate do one) which we got for her on prescription, so you dont need to worry about the cost.
If it helps ease your mind, she was on soya milk till age 2, then we had to kinda mix soya with cows to see how she got on, and was fine, and is now perfectly fine and drinks cows milk fine..and she is now 9!!!!

We've had another REALLY hard night last night with her screaming. I honestly feel like every bottle I give her I'm poisoning her. She's obviously in pain when she's taken it and cramps like mad during and after (not to mention the poo is flying out of her and she had to be changed 6 times from midnight to 5am which is normal for her now)

I don't think I can wait till tues to go to the baby clinic to see the Dr when it opens at 9am I'll be trying to get an appointment!

awwww annie - i would insist on an appointment today hun. If they refuse, tell them you want a doctor to come out to the house. My doctors always miraculously find an appointment if i tell them that ;) Failing that, you could always ring the children's for advice - they may tell you to take her for them to check her over. Good luck. x

If they don't give you one I'd buy some soya milk anyway, see how she goes on it

i got through and after the receptionist insisting she be told what was wrong I was given an appointment at 10:30am.

I don't want to change her to soy milk in case she's allergic to that as well then have to change her to hypoallergenic as this would upset her tummy even more changing her milk this much.

I know that something just "isn't right" time will tell I guess.

I'll update when we're back

Well the dr said she thinks it is a milk allergy but not to put her onto soy milk till it's confirmed. She has sent a letter of ref to the childrens which will take 6-8 weeks.

I asked what we should do in the mean time, the poor wee mite is obviously in pain and she said nothing, change her formula to a diff brand (even though the HV said yest not to do this)

She asked why I wasn't BF any more ( I fed her myself for 3 weeks) and I said I couldn't keep up with the demand as she was wanting to feed every 20 mins - I was exhausted and wasn't managing to get any more than an oz of milk with expressing and she said "situations such as these prove the theory breast is best" she asked if I could try to re-start feeding her myself and when I said it's been 3 weeks of not feeding my milk is gone (not that there was lots to begin with) she said oh well, it would have been best for the baby.

So now I feel like a total failure as a mother and all her pain is my fault!

I went out and got a new tub of milk today (even though I only bought a new one of C&G yest on the HV's instructions) I got a tin of Farleys to see if that'll make any difference although I doubt it. I asked if I should just buy the soy stuff and she said no as it's not as nutritious as normal milk.

We just need to wait it out for the appointment now even though I feel like I'm poisoning her with ever bottle.

I can't make Jelly's tomorrow as we're going to be ladies what lunch. I'm meeting my friend from work for coffee and I'm looking forward to it, I'll be there Monday though.

Thanks for your help guys xxx

That seems an awful long time to wait when the poor child is in pain. Take no notice of them though, you're NOT a failure as a mum. I was made to feel like that when CHOSE not to BF with 1, 2 & 3. As far as I'm concerned, thats just what it was for me - A CHOICE! If you can't do it, then there is nothing you can do - i tried with speedy 4 and she just wasnt getting enough from me. Again, was made to feel like i was just giving up at the first hurdle, but her blood sugars were still haywire from my diabetes, and within a couple of hours of having a bottle, they righted themselves and we were discharged from the hospital. I tried a mixture of both, once we got home, but she just would NOT take to BF - it could have been something to do with her having a "tongue tie" and she just could not seem to latch on properly. Anyway, enough of my waffling, don't let them make you feel guilty - lets hope the change of milk might help :)

well after the last post she has now projectile vomited half way across the room and filled her nappy twice all in 10 mins! She's not projectile vomited before so it must be the new milk.

Flaming nora what do I do? Do I persevere with the farley's or go back to the c&g? Oh my, my, my

My oldest was allergic to formula, she was projectile vomiting too,. doctor prescribed soya milk there and then. 6/ 8 weeks is a long time to wait for the childrens. Could you ring them, explain the situation ,see if they could hurry it along in my opinion the receptionists are great if they can help they will especially if you tell them how young she is. Worth a try anyway.

I agree with boosmum, see if you could maybe get a cancellation or something?

anniec

i'll try that, I'll ring them tomorrow. The Dr said it's not classed as urgent as she's gaining weight! - doesn't matter that the poor wee flower is in pain.

Well we got an appointment through for mid June - 8 weeks from when we went to the GP. After 4 days toward the end of last week of constant crying we'd had enough and bought a tub of Infasoy.

Scarlett is now like a different baby. She settles well, is content (most of the time lol) and is pooing a mere 3 times a day. The only problem we have with the Soy milk is it's made her unbelievably constipated.

She's crying when she's trying to go and the poor wee mite is pooing what looks like golf balls (well big enough and hard enough to be - I doubt they;d be many people playing golf if the balls stunk as badly as this lol)

From speaking to Boosmum she has said it was the same for her lo so we'll stick with it and just try to feed her cooled boiled water.

The HV agreed that we were prob right about the allergy but said we shouldn't have changed the milk. I just hope that her not having the milk protein in her system at our hosp appointment wont make a difference.

or you can get lactose free milk, both are available at supermarkets... maybe that's relieve the constipation? :)

Anniec, I should have pointed you in the direction of one of our mums at Jelly's...remind me on Monday and I'll tell you who. Son 1 (hers) is milk intolerant, not sure about son 2 yet.
