View Full Version : What's the deal with hooligans? CLOSED

What is the deal? These cretins are hellbent on making life for local people and students, an absolutely misery.

Let's all sing the praises of the wonderful ecclesall road - pub district, but its crap. I got back in about 5 mins ago and driving up past Pomona and Nursery Tavern - there was mayhem. People running down the middle of the street with baseball caps and hooded tops - smashing up glasses with intent for their use as weapons. This took place about 23:25 tonight. Broken glass everywhere. At one stage i thought they were gonna throw a bottle at my car.

Then to add insult to injury - i try reporting it as an escalating violence case on 999, i took 2 mins for the police to answer. Fair play - response time after that wasnt too bad but i think it had more to do with the fact that police were a bit feisty and fancied donning their helmets, trunchents, shields etc....

But dont worry - you heard it first here from me. It wont be in the news and the media often dont condone this sort of trouble - and the truth is the hooligan element is alive and well. Its brewing up in sheffield for sure!!! Who knows where it will lead to next.................................:evil:

So, was this rival fans fighting or just random carnage?

hard to say really - at a rough guess this may have been a regular meet between the Blades Business Crew of Sheffield United and the Owls Crime Squad of Sheffield Wednesday. But who knows - maybe a wrong stare by a innocent drinker, or just muppets trying to be clever and fighting whoever they decide to pick on for the night.

My personal grievance stems from the fact that me and two others got the SH*T kicked out of us when we went to Republic about 1 1/2 yrs ago. I've only dared to go back there twice since. As a result - a mate of mine suffered a fractured orbital and had to be admitted to RHH for a week following an operation. The cause-----well we never started owt, so wrong place at the wrong time!!!!

What about the other football firms (Sheffield OCS, Cardiff Soul Crew, Chelsea Head Hunters etc).

Why single out the BBC? Is it because they were the ones that attacked you? How do you know it was the BBC?

I'm not defending the attack, just curious as to the singling out.

I have opted not to vote as I know a lot of people that belong to various football firms and it is a way of life.
Not one I feel is a good one. I personally feel football related violence is a cancer on the game and the world, but who am I to judge.

If it wasn't this, it would be something else. There are normal gangs around that would kick the hell out of you as soon as look at you, who are not related to football. I have seen it, it's a scary world.

From what I understand, is.. unless you end up in the middle of the fight somehow, then these firm tend to (but some people dont stick to this rule) attack only other firms.

Read Blades Business Crew by Steve Cowens. It's actually a good read, and offers some insight into why people join these firms!

I too know many people like this coming from london where I was surrounded by supporters of millwall, chelsea, west ham etc. They are all a*seholes.

I have seen it many a time where innocent supporters get caught up in violence. You simply can't get out and sometime even have to fight to defend yourself. It is impossible to tell who the holligan is and who has inadvertantly been caught up in it all. As a consequence you are all labelled "hooligan" and risk a crack over the head by the police or arrest. Mind you, I don't blame the police, it's an immpossible situation for them to handle.

The only solution I can think of is to let these a*seholes stay behind after the match and kick ****e out of one another on the pitch. The clubs can then pick up the bill and nobody else gets drawn into their mindless world. Of course this will never happen because in this country we protect the criminal first and the public second.

For an insight into the local hooligan culture both the BBC and OCS have internet forums, I won't paste the links on here but a simple internet search will find them. No mention of this recent Ecclesall Road incident mentioned by chalicefc3 but the area is notorious for clashes between the two groups.

The hooligan element is alive and well in SY and beyond. For all their muster, nationally the OCS are better respected (?) than the BBC amongst their hooligan peers.

The recent trouble at Hillsborough Corner is the work of both groups coming together for a chat... There's also been trouble at Frechville and in Studentville in recent weeks..

The BBC court case has been going on for weeks at the Court - verdicts expected soon...

Pretty sad in my opinion

Tony... did I say I was condoning any of their actions.... erm NOPE!

But football firms live by a code of just smashing the heads in of other football firms. I never mentioned the pubs did I?

Yes they go into bars, yes they smash em up... no I'm not condoning it. No I never said I condoned it.

A friend and I were discussing the 'problem' of footbal violence between 'well organised' groups of combatants or firms.

Since most of the hassle appears to be outside of the match, the solution is to let them fight in a controlled arena.

All football stadia could have large chainlink enclosures littered with cafe tables, scrapped cars, benches etc to make them feel at home. Anyone turning up at the match for a fight could go to their 'end' of the arena, sign a disclaimer, receive their complimentary bike chain, tetanus jab and antibiotics and wade in swinging.

My friend, who is a little more extreme on these matters, suggested not letting anyone out, and the last man standing gets a bullet. That way you've used up only one bullet, and got rid of tens, possibly hundreds, of people for whom violence is entertainment.

I say, that if people want to punch the crap out of each other, then that is their decision, but they should be able to do so in a way that does not negatively impact on the lives of others.

A sanctioned arena for this sort of activity might end up attracting bigger audiences than the game itself. The thing is that audience particpation could be active encouraged by distributing rocks and glass bottles to the people watching the fight, rather than the game.

I like the cut of your jib, young man, (is it PT or PMT for short?)

However, if you allow people to watch and give them missiles then that makes them as bad as the people doing the fighting in the first place. Yoy could have concentric rings of chain link fences graduating from out and out thug in the middle to mild and occassional sadist on the outside. Whichever way, I do like the idea of keeping the violence away from the poor innocents who get caught up in it.

Remember, a well placed fuel air bomb can solve a lot of social problems. :P

Hmmm... watch the film "ID" for an insight into the society of football 'crews' and the psychological aspects of trying to leave what becomes your loyal 'family'. And it's a good film anyway!

I have been to hundreds of football matches and to be honest, the hooligan element in and around the grounds is never apparent. But Sheffield over the past few years has gradually got worse and worse and worse...

The worrying factor for me is that the trouble is no longer restricted to match days, fair enough, on match days there is a police presence. But late on a Saturday night on Ecclesall road there isn't, which means that invariably some innocent bystanders get implicated into it one or another.

A few years back I went to watch Wednesday play Derby County, around 1500 Wednesday fans travelled to Derby not to watch the match, but to avenge the attack on a Wednesday fan at Hillsborough the year before...nothing happened so these fans on the trains home decided the police were going to be the target, when that had done, they then decided that they were going to look for elements of the BBC around town...all you could hear were people on mobile phones saying 'theres some in the Old Monk...' and 'my birds on the scanner, she says there waiting in the Penny Black...' My girlfriend vowed never to watch a match again and to be honest, I was disgusted by the supporters of the club I support.

At Leicester City last year, a group of us were attacked by a load of blades fans in Leicester train station at 7-30 PM, firstly what were Blades fans doing in Leicester that night, and I by no means look remotely like 'one of the Wednesday boys'. 13 of them, four of us, yeah they are real big men these aren't they...thankfully, the police intervened and we escaped relatively unscathed.

The point is that, all of a sudden, being a member of the BBC or the OCS is a good thing...when it is not, hooliganism is a cancer on football, the sole reason why England may not even play an International tournament again due to the behaviour of its fans. This element needs eradicating from football for good.

Dont be so tetchy DB :o . I dont profess to know the BBC personally, but I know plenty of people who do. I also know of a pal that was invited to leave Sheffield permenantly.. now.. dont look back. He was just running a pub that the BBC thought was theirs - until he decided not to put up with the violience any more. He had an effective death threat over him and hasnt returned. The "hangers on" are the ones without much going on between the ears, but there is real organised crime around the hub of the crew - who don't seem to get on CCTV as much as their younger and dafter bretheren.

I don't have any quarrel with the BBC. If you see what you think is about to esculate into a rukus do what any other person with half a brain would do *get the hell out of there.*

Firms are something that aren't going to go away, I don't support what they do but I understand why they do it. I've found keeping yourself to yourself is the best thing to do and they will leave you alone.

Having known elements in the BBC and in the OCS over the years. My opinion is most of the trouble is caused by hangers on or wannabes.

I am not condoning it or saying its big and clever, just people are quick to blame football for alot of trouble. Maybe if these people looked deeper in to it they may understand it more.

Just to warn all those who are not already aware, Sheff Utd play Leeds on Sunday, expect trouble in or around town. 12.30pm kick off as well, which gives the 'firms' all afternoon to run around and try to outwit the police.

A record number 2,596 of convicted hooligans have been banned from attending matches both home and abroad for 10 years according to the Home Office.

The article says that they have to surrender their passports whenever England or Wales are playing. How does this work then?

Is it safe to say that the situation is improving?

They don't give football bad name they give themselves a bad name. I bet if Rugby Union didn't have such a short season compared to footballs it would suffer from the same morons. Thing is they loose interest in the summer months.

Putting my philosophical hat on here, I see sport as a non-violent way for man to vent his natural aggression and intrinsic need to 'get one over' the other. Sport, & football in particular is great for doing this:
- You belong to a tribe/team;
- You enjoy camaraderie with your fellow man;
- You 'hate' the opposition, particularly your neighbours;
- The game itself is the release & 'buzz' of that, with goals, fouls, sending offs et al enhancing that excitment, that 'buzz';
- Victory gives you the 'say'/bragging rights over the defeated.

Sure, the game of football can be physical, players get injured and the crowd gets worked up & verbal - that's were the excitement comes from! This is infinitely preferable than going to war - which is what happened in history, before men had such outlets.

Now football hooligans (the gimps who go out looking to hurt people) are the antithesis of what football is all about. Now, i'm seeing on here where people are saying they aren't 'justifying' or 'condoning' violence but that is seemingly just a caveat for them then to state exactly the opposite. There is no justification for violence in modern society (except in self defence); hence the law, hence the attitude of most sane people who don't go in for that. Hooligans are simply men seeking something to prove. Instead of doing it via career or family or something constructive, they seek to do it through (in a lot of cases) unprovoked violence and bullying.

I'm also seeing rubbish about they only go for rival firms. So, you're seriously telling me that a bunch of these like-minded idiots, tanked-up in the middle of town, after their team has just lost, will not fight anything that they 'judged' to have insulted them in their misguided brains (I was gonna put uneducated but unfortunately some of them are).

In the bigger picture, it's a credit to mankind that they have designed games like football to vent their natural instinct to prove themselves physically rather than seeking to hurt one another, however if we are to continue progress as a race, then football, rather than violence is the way forward.

Apologies for length, but not girth & 'Up the Owls!'

The only thing that will sort out the hoolie problem is a re-classification of the mental health act to include belonging to gangs/firms etc as a recognisable mental illness and allow it to be treated by immediate sectioning into old style insane asylums ......

For those obvious hoolies who think it's OK to have a ruck on a sat or whenever ..... no problem do it!!!! You have the right to do what you want ..... BUT you also have the responsibilty to make sure what you are doing has NO effect what so ever on ANYONE who does not want to be part of it .....

First of all Ocs lad mouthing off about how 30 of them went to the pump"almost a utd boozer"and bbc did'nt show, although Dyer deserves an Oscar for pretending to be intimadated! I don't go looking for trouble but most of these so called 'football hooligans' just stand about in there Stone Island shirts bouncing about behind a line of tooled up riot police then claim a result at running there opposition. Speak to each set of fans after, none of them have a mark on them yet both sides are claiming a 'result'.
