I know this sounds silly, but are there laws in place for smell polution like there are laws for noise polution?
Near where I live there's a placed called Pennine foods, and when they are making curries or something similar the smell can waft for miles, it's really disgusting and it can be like that for a full day and even overnight sometimes...
surely there are laws that govern places like this from doing something about making a 4/5 mile radius absolutly stink!
Not sure specifically about odour legislation, but it may come under environmental health and/or anti-social behaviour laws. Maybe speak to Environmental Health?

Yes. Under Part 3 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 local authorities are obliged to investigate complaints against premises causing a "statutory nuisance" and take action if the nuisance is shown to occur.
Smells fall under this legislation and you will see on other councils' websites there are specific references to this problem.
The problem comes in defining a nuisance and will involved logs of the dates and times and intensity of the stink.
You will also be taken more notice of if you can act collectively with all the local residents rather than as an isolated individual.
Your first step is to call Sheffield City Council Environmental Services on 203 7410.
Also call your Councillor whose number can be found on the Council Website.
I would also suggest that you ask specifically whether they have recieved complaints of this nature before.
thanks for that cgksheff... it affects a lot of people and I'm sure it annoys other people just as much, like you say hi to people on the street when the smells wafting accross and its like "looks like penine is making curries again!"

A few more specifics:
You can read Part 3 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 here. (http://www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts1990/Ukpga_19900043_en_4.htm)
and you will see that Section 79 (d) says that
"any dust, steam, smell or other effluvia arising on industrial, trade or business premises and being prejudicial to health or a nuisance
can constitute a "statutory nuisance".
Councillor details and their contact numbers can be found here. (http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/councillors)

Is the business a new one, or has it been there a long time (does it pre-date you living in the area)?
