View Full Version : Digital SLRs, which one?
Toying with the idea of getting a digital SLR.
Got down to 2 - Minolta 7d and Cannon 20d.
Cannon generally seems to have figures on paper to sway me that way slightly, Minolta reviews seem to love the control layout over the Canon menu based system.
Has anyone had a chance to play with either? What are your opinions? Personal opinions wanted not figures/stats.
(dont quote figures etc as I have read them to death!)
The canon would have be noticably better for me to go that way as I already have a film based SLR from Minolta and so have a few lenses I could use with this DSLR.
cgksheff 25-03-2005, 07:55 I've only used a cheaper DSLR. The Nikon D70 and I think it is fantastic.
Ginger_Kitty 25-03-2005, 09:28 I spoke to a newspaper photographer last year who had a Nikon D70 and a Canon-something else, he said the D70 was the best camera he'd ever had, its good enough for a professional AND cheap enough and easy (?) enough for an amateur
The problem with Canons (i think) is if you buy lots of lenses they will only ever fit a Canon, the lenses you have for something like a D70 will fit other cameras if you decided to upgrade again in the future.
i am after a camera upgrade from the little handy digital to a more substantial digital (slr) type.
does anyone have any recommendations. got my eye set on either Fujisx5000 or kodak dx6490?
Search first - there's a huge thread on here somewhere. It may date back to Christmas, but it's had lots of updates. There are photographic buffs on here
I used jessop's website to choose the features I wanted on mine, but you won't want one of mine ;)
cgksheff 20-04-2005, 16:19 Nikon D70

Got a kodak dx6490. Easy to use, good quality pictures and loads of features both for manual and automatic settings.

matsalleh 20-04-2005, 19:29 What do you want to do with this camera? What do you mean by a digital slr? the Fuji you mention is out of date,it has no flash hot shoe and the built in flashes are usually pretty useless, although you can get round this.Review here :-

Try this :-

Hiya willman, I personally like Kodak cameras , they are simple to use and you get good quality photos, Kyocera also do a good "slr" type and they are good value. I have bought loads of products from www.techstore.co.uk They are a lot cheaper than the shops and the mail order service is fantastic.
I have a Sony Cybershot ......had it for almost a year...well chuffed with it!!!
I can get memory cards off ebay for fraction of store prices (seller id bid4self) - just totally happy 100%!!!!!
Good quality pics with multi-burst 3 minutes video if required!!
My Canon takes real batteries (I use rechargeables) so I'm sometimes the only one who isn't left cameraless by the end of the night :D
matsalleh 21-04-2005, 16:11 My Canon A80 is a fantastic little camera. It allows me to programme and store two different lots of settings.Which saves a lot of time, now out of date but still showing up in Comet.Reckoned to be the best of the A series.Digital Slr it is not and neither are most of the cameras on this thread.

See my post above Re Canon A80 still turning up at Comet for About £150.Also see links above about reviews etc.As people quite rightly often state, search do a bit of the work yourself.
franc1987 22-04-2005, 20:47 I have the Canon EOS 300D and i absolutley love it. I am slightly miffed that theyve bought out the 350D but i sort of new this would happen at christmas.
The only reason i swayed with this D-SLR is because i already have the canon 300V (35mm version) and i absolutly love it. So getting the 300D made sense because of the lenses and already having most of the stuff.
In my personal opinion i prefer Canon to Nikon . When i bought my SLR 2 years ago i did a lot of research and took about 6 trips to harrisons spent about 90 mins badgering him about every single thing and in the end the man told me that he would always have a canon because he found them easier to control and a lot nice to use so the canon it was!
To be honest i would go to a good shop and just see which one you feel most comfortable with!
I'd check out Sony Cybershots too!!
Phanerothyme 23-04-2005, 00:17 They're all good I would say, just make sure you get a good lens.
Nikon have just launched the D50 - might be worth a look, based at the entry level for first DSLR, can use all the usual Nikon AF lenses but a good price.
Personally I've had a D70 for almost a year now - wonderful camera and I can't fault it - has a nice feel in the hands and is built well.
The Canon Eos300D is nice and is a bargain but has a very poor plastic body to it - feels so flimsy and put it next to a Nikon D70 and it looks cheap. Canon have just launched a EOS350 but I'm guessing this will have the same plastic build - 8.1 Mp though (Not that Mp is everything).
