The place that you are staying is about 3 miles from the Crucible, but the tram does go past the front door from the city centre.

It is probably best to check when the last tram runs, and then stay in the city centre in the bars and restaurants around The Crucible. There are lots to choose from.

Hope you enjoy your visit to Sheffield. I enjoyed mine to Belgium.

I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions for going out in the city centre. There are many modern bars with lots of young customers on a Friday or Saturday night, and plenty of nightclubs. Here ae a few notes if you would like to drink some traditioanl English beer in more or less traditional English pubs

If you would like to go to one or two pubs (rather than bars) in the town centre, they CAN be found. Very near the Crucuble is the Brown Bear - it's not modernised at all and some of the customers are real "characters" (probably outnumbered by the snooker fans while you are here). A bit further away (near your tram route) are the Washington, and the Bath.

Others have been smartened up and perhaps lost a bit of character, but are still pubs with good bear, seats, and conversation (rather than bars with lager, lots of standing room and loud music).
- Look up the Red Deer, and the Roebuck.
- For a traditional pub with beer, loud music AND characters - there's the Sportsman.
- For an Irish pub with good beer and lots of chat - go to the Dog and Partridge.
- The Frog and Parrot is very central with good beer, a pub (rather than a bar) that is popular with students and twenty-somethings (all types and ages, actually).
- The Devonshire Cat is a new, light and airy pub which deliberately sits right on the Bar/Pub divide - plenty of seats and chat and and an excellent range of English and Belgian beers (including draft Kriek and Frambozen and Peche), but with a studenty (rather than real ale fan) feel.

ALSO !
If you get back early to your hotel, or if you would like a drink or two before setting off for an evening session, you have picked a hotel with a good location. The Queen's Ground is in the area where lots of Sheffield's Real Ale pubs are concentrated.

The ones nearest you are
Hillsborough Hotel
Cask and Cutler
New Barrack Tavern
Gardner's Rest

The first two are on your tram route into town.
- Get off at the "Langsett/Primrose View" tram stop and walk 50 yards forwards to find the Hillsborough Hotel on your left. Lots of very good English beers, some of them brewed locally (and some by the pub's own brewery).
- Get off at the "Shalesmoor" tram stop and walk back ten yards for the Cask and Cutler. Very good range of English and Belgian beers.
Neither of these pubs looks very exciting from the outside, but don't worry, just walk straight in - they are both very friendly to newcomers. They don't play recorded music (live music at the Hillsborough hotel, sometimes)
