I would like to inform any ex Yewlands School pupils that there is a website for you to contact old school friends. I set it up as a FREE meeting place after finding that it cost £5 per year just to send an old friend an email at friends reunited.

Yewlandspast.co.uk visit us and join in with the banter on our FREE discussion forum. :)

Or even post some of your old school photos in our online photo gallery.

You may be interested to know that Olympic Bronze Medallist, Sheila Sherwood (nee Parkin) went to Yew Lane from the age of 11 to 13, at which point she passed her "13 Plus" and went to Echo.

I was in the same class as Sheila Parkin all the time she was at Yew Lane and that was from the age of 11 in 1957 until she was 16 in 1962. During her time in the 5th year 1961/1962 she was the Head Girl. Sheila sat her GCE's at Yew Lane and then moved to Ecclesfield to study for her A Levels.

Does anyone remember the teachers:_

Miss Honeyball (Biology)
Mr Topham (English)
Mr Topham (PE)
Mr Morris (Geography & Commerce)
Mr Mitchell (AKA Rubberneck) (History)
Mrs Wragg (English)
Mr Metcalfe (Environmental Science)
Mr Collette (Asst Head and Geography)
Miss Jones (French & German)
Mr Watkin (French)

I also remember 2 headmasters - Carter and Bland. Didn't one of them get killed by lightening whilct camping in France?

And who was the little fat bloke who taught Physics?

The physics teacher was Mr. Avil. He had a habit of handcuffing girls to the stools in Room 2. I'm sure he'd be locked up for that sort of thing these days!

I left in 82 - Topham (PE) was like the thinking man's Howard Wilkinson <g>, he had a young chap with him called Merriman? who used to hunt down the female hockey teacher - who was a real tiger on the sports pitch...

McKenzie - the mad art teacher and Colin Tanser the music teacher - who looked like he was catweazels twin brother - I was in CJ Fullers class - he was a creep and was convicted in the late 80's for 'having pictures of young children' - we always knew he was a freak and its a pity no adults noticed !

I seem to recall that in 1967/68 that Yew Lane had a cracking football team. I'm trying hard to recall names - Bogey Platts, Geoff Evans, Richie Richardson. They would be 54/55 now
Can anyone enlighten me about the others?

In my time at Yewlands (77-82) - the best footballer was probably Rob Bloomer - went on to play for Chesterfield (scored 2 pens v the piggies) and is now coaching at Cheltenham

I don't think any of the rest of them were much to write home about.

Chaucer was ****e - I used to hang about with kids from there. In fact I once played rugby for them - went as a supporter of a mate who was playing and half the team failed to turn up and they taught me the basics of the game in 10 mins - it was a fun game but Yewlands didn't do it, god knows why?

Geoff Evans? There was a teacher at Colley by that name. Not sure if he was a PE teacher but he did go on to marry Miss Boothe who taught PE at the same school. Wonder if it's the same Mr.Evans!

I left in 85 and these names bring back happy memories. McKenzie now/was working for a funeral directors as a driver. Tanser, top man. He wouldn't know one day from the next but certainly was the spit of cat weazel. I seem to remember he had a ginger afro!!!!!

Was the female PE teacher Miss Coy by the way?
Others I can remember being Mrs Stolton (History) she completely lost her marbles, Mr Ward (IT sort of bloke), Mr Turner (Tech Drawing) Mr Lipka (PE).

CJ Fuller was convicted for taking pictures of young children, not for having pictures, although I would regard them as one and the same.

InternetOwl - would you have been in Bob Bloomers year then, as I played football with him for the Old Harrow.

I also remember Mr Topham, Mr Mitchell (who was deaf)! Mr Metcalfe taught Maths I believe. I was at Yew Lane SMS 1962-66. I don't remember the little fat Bloke, but I do remember Mr Carter, the head. I think Mrs Mason was Deputy Head and taught French. Does anyone know if the mural inside the foyer is still there. Four hundred miles away from Yew Lane school I happened to meet up with another pupil. He is my hairdresser and we attended the same school (different name) twenty years apart. Funny old world.

I must have been there about the same time as you !!!

I remember the English Teacher Mr Topham (old man Topham) who would begin most classes by telling the troublemakers to get outside the class so that there was no disruption. We read some amazing books in his class.....
I also remember Mr Fuller, we went on a school trip to France and some of the boys caught him looking under the blinds at the girls getting ready for bed. We all agreed he should get a good pasting from a group of 15 year olds (which he did...) instead of reporting him to the other teachers as he was a total perv....
Was anyone else on that trip ???

Iain Kelly - if your Mum's maiden name was Selman, then she was in my class at Ecclesfield Infant and Junior School. The Mary I knew, married a Kelly. Sadly, she is no longer with us, but I remember her vividly. As a teenager, she was an absolute stunner. She actually stopped the traffic, as drivers let her cross the road in The Haymarket. Mary had a very bubbly personality and was liked by everyone. A Mum to be very proud of.

Nigel, I had given up on a reply to my post and have just found yours today. I don't know what I was thinking putting my Mum's married name down. Thanks for your kind words about her, I'd love to talk to anyone else who might have known her. I left Ecclesfield when I was 15 but there must be quite a few people there who remember her.

Thanks again, it meant a great deal to read your post

All the best

The trip sounds familar. Think Ive got some pics somewhere. mmmm can I remember who was there when I was?....... Karen Smith, Suzanne Bradley, Kevin Smith, Wayne Simpson, Barrie Pollard to name a few.

I seem to remember that one of the teachers husbands came, think he may have been american and the lads put toothpaste all over the door handle and it was him that opened the door. They also took the springs out of someones bunk and it collapsed when he got in it:D

My memory of Mr Topham was the dancing at lunchtime around christmas

I left in 84' my tutor was Ms Knight, she started with us and left when we left,. Last time I saw her she was selling the socailist worker down the High St. several years later. The other maths teachers were Mr. (smoke the cigar) Benson ther was one that went on to open a shoe shop just after we started What about Mr. (Claypole) Bishton who taght phisics and the one in the work shop that looked like Captain Kremmen and his mate that was always sweating Mr. Holmes I do believe and my old friend the Gordy phisics teacher. He once tried to beat me up at the back of the class in the labs in the Bristol block his name has slipped my mind, Alderson, thats it Mr. Alderson. I saw him some years later crossing the road near the University, was tempted to put my foot down. I wonder if he still drives the old 2CV. Can anybody remeber the name of the teacher from the work shops that was involved with the restoration of the moggy 1000 in the garage he drove an old mini wore John Lennon specs and had terrible breath? Mr. Morton if memory serves, left to teach at Chaucer I do believe, also mr. Trevorrow, Miss Coy was ther when I left, and Mrs Overland.
