the govenment is going to widen the m1 & m62 motorways the sections to be widened are

m1 between leeds and chesterfield
m62 between Leeds and Huddersfield

the total price for this scheme will be £1.29bn with work starting in 2007 don't no what they will do when they get to the tinsley viaduct as surely this cannot be widened

Well, that will delight the workers in the national road-cone factory.

Job security for at least twenty years and as much overtime as they like.

Surely widening this stretch of road is a good thing? At least they're not putting humps all over it like most Sheffield roads!

The pot holes on our road have been here 198 years, so according to the Star they're due to be filled year after next.

This is a fairly outstanding peice of news as anyone driving up to leeds on a friday afternoon (or any time for that matter) will agree... now all we need is a tunnel from crosspool to the M67 and we're sorted.

If it can't be widened (and I'm not an architect or an engineer so I don't know whether or not it can) there are other possibilities. For example, a second bridge could be built close to the existing one. If a second bridge is built they could build one of a similar width to the existing one and use both (one for northbound traffic, one for southbound) or build a wider one with two carriageways to replace the existing viaduct. Another possibility could be to stop using the lower tier of the viaduct for local traffic, redesignate it as part of the M1 and re-shape the approaches at either end of the viaduct so that northbound traffic uses one tier and southbound traffic uses the other tier.

They wont put speed humps in it per se...they will just put a few thousand potholes in it...then patch it up with some shoddy tarmac, and then the next time it rains it will fall apart again...that will make you slow down....:hihi:

I heard that the viaduct strenghthening works was to allow it to be returned to the three lanes of old (pre Meadowhall). That should eleviate the present bottle neck somewhat

When they widened the M6 at the notorious Thelwall Viaduct, they have two four lane bridges side by side, one going North, the other South.

So, they could build a new bridge and just have the old viaduct for Northbound traffic, or vice versa depending on which side they could plonk a new bridge because of the cooling towers.

Wasn't the idea of demolishing the cooling towers dropped before as it was considered too much of a risk to the existing viaduct?

Having driven over the thellwall viaduct everytime i visited my girlfriends and my parents over the past couple of years, i can only imagine what fun we're all in for when the road works start.

Does anyone ever get the feeling when they drive past roadworks that they've just been put there because there was no where else to store the cones??

i'm sure that was the justification given in the government white paper on it.

Nothing to do with the miles of tail backs. Just to allow speeding. :loopy:

Does anyone really believe it will solve the congestion problem. I remember the M25 being widened to 4 lanes in sections soon after it was opened. No traffic jams there then

What it will mean is 3 years of hellish roadworks.

It's a disgrace and a total waste of money. It will be no time at all before it's full again and precious green space will once again have been wasted.

No mate, just another lane for idiots to tool along in at 50mph.

A 4th lane is gonna cause these clowns more confusion.

Which will be the safest lane to drive in??

"Eeek. But there's now 2 'middle lanes' to choose from! Oh deary me. What shall I do?? Best hedge my bets and use the OUTSIDE lane. Just to be on the safe side.".

Given that the exit of J.34 is before the viaduct, and the on road is after, I would imagine they will simply have the inside lane as a feeder lane that will dissappear off down the slip road, leaving 3 lanes on the viaduct.
