Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and even newer to sheffield.
Having spent the last 13 years in London I have the opportunity to work and live in Sheffield. However I have my doubts if I will like it. I will be starting a completely new life and moving up on my own to a new job.

Is there anyone who can entice me to feel confident with the move as I will be johnny no mates and have no idea where I could possibly live.

I'll be working in the city centre so all avice is highly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum thecat!

We're a really friendly bunch on here (mostly!) I'm sure you could use this forum to make some mates! When you arrive you could tag along to one of the forum meets (weekly I believe).

Try using the 'search site' facility for details on areas; there's tons of threads with peoples' opinions.

Good Luck!

Sheffield is ace (And don't believe the "nay-sayers"!!, its fabulous here!)

Welcome, my duck! Come in, and make yourself at home!

Mash yersen a cuppa, pull up a chair, and start getting stuck in , chipping in on the comments on the threads on here. you'll be an old-hand before you know it ! :D

Hope you settle in, here,

And do feel free, if and when you can, to come along and join in one of the meets. You'll be made very welcome. (see the thread in "going out in Sheffield" for dates, times and venues!)

Hi There,

A meet sounds like a good idea. I came up for my second job interview last week and I must admit I really had a good feeling about it and that I would like Sheffield.

I grew up in the midlands and have found the north far less pretencious (i think that's how you spell it) than the south.

Are there any places I should avoid moving to? I think I want to move somewhere which is easily commutable to the city. Applologies for being naive but I assume Sheffield is quite large.

I'll be sticking to this forum for sure and thanks for getting back to me.

Hi Emily,

Got your PM but couldn't reply due to being new on this thread. Definately like your proposition and being welcomed by people who have just moved up to Sheffield and getting to know the local pubs and places to go.

I have my third and final interview in a couple of weeks and if all goes well 10 beers on me for those who would like to meet a London deserter (escapeee) when I come up.

I have every confidence that I will enjoy my new life if this forum is anything to go by.

LIve like your dying - a great moto i remember from an old friend in Yorkshire. If the beers are warm then it's because I've been guided to the wrong pub, but sociable and open minded ...certainly I am.

Is that you down for the first beer on my list then Saxon?

Very VERY true that, life's way too short.

24-03-2005, 17:32
You bet, and for your info Sheffieldish for a pint is 'gallon', and Sheffieldish for beer is 'Stones'.:heyhey:

So mine's a gallon of Stones please....hic!

Hi,

All things in context.. a gallon of beer would be worth watching you drink and learning from. 'Live like your dying' is the story of a friend and I driving from London to Gambia across the Sahara 7,000km and 30 days unaided for a charity in January. We made it but his philosophy was spot on as we were lucky to be alive every day. It wasn't big or brave but our contribution is saving lives today in some of the remotest places in Africa.

Perhaps the reason for me moving to sheffield I think also.

Either way l hope to meet interesting people wherever I go, hopefully Sheffield is where fate will take me.

Just so I don't turn up under false pretences, that is 10 beers each right?

(you're not down south anymore y'know).

If 10 beers each is a sign of things to come then I'm in for the ride. Not a big drinker myself however accomodation is one of my strongest principles.

Where is a good pub to drink and be merry near the train station - I'ts all I know of sheffield.

And would that be larger or mild?

I'm not normally one to drink pints, (delicate flower that I am! :suspect:  ), but I'll make the exception if they're free! :D

I'm surprised at the correspondence, but sadly in need of a new life that will be more fullfilling. 10 free pints can always be spread over a period of time if my company is appreciated.

Is free beer the magic word worldwide?

Yes, I can see thecat sitting there now, thinking, 'What am I letting myself in for? I'll humour these nutters for now and move somewhere else instead.'

Not to embarass anyones intelligence, I am sincere in my offer although this thread is my first avenue to connect with sheffielf in jest.

My predicament is to move to Sheffield and make a new life without feeling insecure. How long do you think it would take for you to drink 10 pints anyway saxon?

10 pints + 10 days sounds sociable to me and more honest. I'm no big drinker as I said but always up for a laugh and smile. (I'm not a southerner by the way - I grew up in a hole in the ground called Handsworth in B-Ham).

I couldn't be more serious about meeting up for a beer with Sheffield folk.

although all this talk of free beer has wetted my appetite, I'm interested to know what scene you are into as to provide you with a more fulfilling outlet for your enthusiaim. Surely a good pub is not all your after, do you need guidance on clubbing, pubbing, eating well, activities etc etc

Well thecat, that is very kind of you to offer. Although I prefer white, to red, I'm quite happy to drink rose if you're buying the wine as well as the beer.

Location, location, location is everything. I suggest you check out Norfolk Park. Only 3 tram stops to city centre. Listed Heritage Park on the doorstep. Fabulous views of the city centre and the Peak District moors. Very up and coming location. Go see! Good luck with the interview! Look forward to welcoming you to Sheffield, especially over a glass of wine....on 10 consecutive days of course!

Thanks redrobbo for the location location tip I'll look into it first think tomorrow. I'm also an increadibly sociable person with an open mind to most things so I'm looking for an atmosphere where I live.

Fingers crossed for the next interview and I'll be back on this thread to meet up with those who are still thirsty.

Thanks a million everyone - I'm all fired up for the interview now.

Hi aNTAcid, I need all the advice you can offer?

scotia
24-03-2005, 19:56
i first came to Sheffield 26yrs ago
i married a Sheffielder 31 yrs ago

i was terrified as i came from a very small Scottish village

i had never seen so many people and cars

i can remember saying how clean a place it was for a City and how beautiful the hole in the road was ...flowers in bloom etc

i still have quite a strong Scotish accent laced with the odd na then thee, which always raises a smile

peole ask where i come from
i say Sheffield
they say "NO where is your home"
i say Sheffield

the people are the friendliest i have ever come across
and the sense of humour is one on its own
yes i have my steel over-coat on i learnt you have to be prepared to be the brunt of the jokes
i also learnt you can give as good as you get without causing offence
" na then who does tha think tha's talking to " in a good Scottish accent usually sorts them out lol

hope your interview goes well thecat
you will settle in nicely i can see by your comments that you have a sense of humour
