With Persepolis out this week - the jury prize winner at Cannes, I wondered the above.

Would it be old skool disney hand drawn or CGI? Admittedly this is a broad debate and animated films have many sub genres such as manga etc...but be interested to hear people's thoughts

my ten cents worth...it's between spirited away and toy story 2 but assume many many will disagree

South park without any doubt.

Just thinking about it makes me want to sing the uncle ****** song.

'The Nightmare Before Christmas' for me.

Or any of the Wallace and Grommit/Aardman films, they're awesome!

'The Nightmare Before Christmas' is a treat, as are all of the Aardman animations. I loved the first 'Robbie the Reindeer' too.

Jungle book or Madagaska

Madagascar was crap IMO.

The Shrek trilogy was good though, I'm just concerned that Shrek 4 won't be, as it's apparently going to be a "prequel" to the first one.

I found "The INCREDIBLES" to be really good!

THE IRON GIANT :)
or the older animated lord of the rings (brilliant blend of animation and live action for its time) pity it never got finished :(

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Top class mix of cartoon characters and live action! Jessica Rabbit!

Grave of Fireflies is the most powerful thing I've seen. When The Wind Blows, Fantasia, the Toy Stories, Blue Cat,

Akira.

Not usually interested in Manga but this is excellent.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a good call, I also agree with muddycoffee about South Park!

I still think that it is How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966).

For me it is the divine anime that is Wings of the Honeamise. Possibly the best animated films I have had the pleasure of seeing.

Graves of the Fireflies for me too.
I think that was the turning point for me to see animation as a medium and really disassociated that animation = cartoons = for kids viewing only.

Ooooh, difficult question!

Can't decide between Spirited Away, Nightmare Before Christmas, Jungle Book and Interstellar (the extended Daft Punk animated video that's just beautiful). I'll probably remember some more too...Would Beowulf count as 'animated'?

THE IRON GIANT :)

The technique was Rotoscope - Bakshi got as far as Helm's Deep, but then Rankin Bass did a version of Return of the King (and one of The Hobbit) supposedly to finish it off. It's not been seen much outside the USA though.

I liked the technique but the Hobbits were crap ;)

Would have to say Spirited Away or Akira. Saying that I think all the Pixar animated films are quality.

Wow. Even the anime fans I know haven't heard of this film, let alone seen it. But you are right, it is fantastic.

I'd also nominate My Neighbour Totoro (the best Miyazaki film), Millenium Actress or Fantasia.

I like Akira, Grave of the Fireflies (don't watch if depressed!) and Blood the Last Vampire. Am looking forward to seeing Persepolis. I wish they'd make the comic book Maus into a animated film. It's got it's critics, mainly for the portrayal of the Polish as pigs, but it would be a great way for teenagers to learn about the holocaust.

I will check out the other films mentioned on here. Not many of my mates are into anime, so I pick up recommendations where I can.

If you want, I can draw up a list of anime films that I think everyone should watch at least once?

That would be much appreciated.

I'm quite anal, and for some reason one of the things I enjoy doing is drawing up lists.

Give me some time and I'll PM you with my recommendations.

Beavis and Butthead Do America. That film wins hands down.

Failing that and to regain a bit of credibility, I would say 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'. That film is awesome and I never tire of seeing it, although I do only tend to watch it around crimbo to get me in the mood :P

While there are many more technically better animated films, my vote would have to go to Watership Down. I never get tired of watching it.
