Any of you learned friends any idea where I can buy fresh fruit and vegetables. Preferably in South of Sheffield. I find it incredible that I find it necessary even to ask the question. However , I am fed up of foreign bruised apples and cabbages etc. that go off in the fridge in a few days. What has happened to the Cox's apples we used to have whose pips rattled if you shook them? Why is there no taste or smell to the produce?? Do you know of any farm shops that sell locally grown goods? Thanks.

A farm shop called "Liberty Foods" on the A621 Baslow Road in Totley (Just before the Cross Scythes Pub) is very good, 253 Baslow Road Sheffield, S17 4DU.

Now the name sounds a bit 'namby pamby/beardy lefty' but the shop is top dollar. They have their own cattle herd in Dore and hang and butcher their own meat (will of course do this to your request as well). Albeit most produce is organic ,they don't have organic status as they use fertiliser on the grasing land, doesn't matter one way or another as the meat is excellent. They produce excellent cuts, saussages (lovely!) and homemade pies & excellent "ready meals" - very good homemade local quality, but not at all pricey.

The best thing is that because they are a small buisiness and have minimal transport costs, the price of this excellent produce is no more expensive than a supermarket.

They also have a good selection of fresh local fruit & vegetables and other produce. It seems rediculous to pay for this stuff to be transported 1000s of miles and for us to pick up the cost when you can buy locally.

Give it a try!

Loads of different fresh fruit and vegetables, at real bargain prices, can be bought on the market stalls on The Moor. If you're going up Walkley way though - there is a fantastic bakery in the old bank premises. Fresh bread baked on the premises, and cakes too. Highly recommended.

Beanies will deliver across sheffield, and their veg is great. Also the fruit and veg shop in broomhill is great.
