Ok, a friend of mine has set up a website.

I was wondering if anyone knew, and could give me a clue about something that has been on my mind...

If, whilst surfing the net, I have gone to my friend's site, and then go to another site, I use my browser's "back" button, to return to my friend's website, does it count as a fresh, or individual "hit", or not?

(he obvious answer, which is "look at the "hits counter" is not an option. I can't see the counter on the site:- for some reason, my pc has certain things blocked, so all I see in the counter window is the dreaded "little red cross". I don't know hoe to alter the settings in order to see it))

Thanks in advance.

PT....

'It depends'....:)

Seriously, all depends upon how someone evaluates 'hits' to their site.

If there is code in place that increments a counter whenever the page is loaded, then it might increment each time, depending upon whether or not a locally cached copy of the page was used.

If they work out from the logs, then again, will depend upon caching arrangements on the browser.

I'm not an expert in these things - this is why I'm a humble techie and not a marketing whizz... :)

PT I use a counter on my personal website and I have come across counters on others and on both the number has increased everytime I've looked at the site - even using the back button (in the case of my site it has to be from a machine other than my own because I have set it up so that it doesn't count my "hits").

Does that help?

he/she could try www.bravenet.com for a counter :) I remember using a counter from them at one point... it counts unique hits, so it keeps track of their IP and so wont keep adding them all the time, of course the IP expires after a little bit, so if they visit again later in the evening or something it will count again.

I suppose you could use something thats cookie based, place a cookie on their system that doesn't expire, then only add people without the cookie?
