See link above to the story that the socialist government in Spain has a mostly female cabinet office as well as imposing limits on percentage of men at directorships of major companies! How progressive and admirable for a country that we Brits are known to love so much!! This has got to be a good thing surely- men and women are equally adept to be in top positions of authority and it will be interesting to see how a female majority will run the country (and whether it will be different in any way from a male one).

Interested to know what the Sheffield Forum people think of this in view of some threads I have been reading recently? A good thing? Should the UK work harder to ensure there are more women in top positions in this country?

Trouble is if they all got pregnant at the same time the country would grind to a halt

And what is the excuse for the country going into almost recession while majority of males are in power? :hihi:

We have to wait on the pregnant women and do everything for them of course;)

Lot of people on here didn't seem to like it much when a woman was in charge in this country.

A quarter of our cabinet are women but would anyone want more likes of Harriet Harmans, Jacqui Smiths, Hazel Blears, Ruth Kellys and Hilary Benns.

Also when women are in government they risk becoming sex objects objects like this one. (http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30200-1313293,00.html)

If women were in power I rekon there would be less wars, so that is a plus point.

I'd imagine that in 1930's a female pm would have nagged Hitler, and he'd have eventually given up.

You want to check that one out over previous 26 years or so before any comment is made?

Yes the Argentina war.

Mrs T went in there, and the job was done within 3 months.

Contrast that with this current war.....

Should the UK work harder to ensure there are more women in top positions in this country?

Shouldn't we be trying to get the best person for the job, regardless of whether they're male or female?

The so-called Universal Sisterhood of Women is a myth.

I don't find it particularly progressive and even less admirable. If they had a situation where people were promoted based on their capabilities not their gender then that would be admirable. Imposing limits and quotas is counter-productive as it leads to the assumption that, no matter how talented a women actually is, that she got there to fill a quota rather because of her abilities.

the currrent crop of cabinet ministers harman , jowell, blears, kelly and smith has set back the advancement of women in politics for decades
