Every new driver must make the colourful trip to Skeggy! maniclee 23-03-2005, 20:41 On a nice day, Clumber Park perhaps. Or Rother Valley Country Park. If you have a car the world's yr lobster my son! beansforyou 23-03-2005, 20:45 Castleton is gorgeous, Matlock, Buxton, Bakewell, all out in the lovely countryside :) Cleethorpes if you want seaside, hour and a bit, all motorway Rich 23-03-2005, 20:45 Cleethorpes is only just over an hour away, easy drive as well, Parkway, M18 plus M180.. Sorted, and you get the chance to sample the wonderfulness of traditional fish and chips caught just down the road in Grimsby. stevey_kabba 23-03-2005, 21:04 Nice 1 people, cheers for all the ideas, im thinkin clumber park (my house virtually backs onto rother valley so wudnt be much of a trip) on sunday possibly although can bet it will be packed if weathers any good wi it bein easter sunday jackthedog 24-03-2005, 07:29 I like the drive out to the seaside without using the motorways - heading out through Rotherham, Doncaster etc and just keep heading east till you get to Scarbrough. Lovely drive on a nice day - in fact I nearly rang the other half one lunch hour last week and said "its a lovely day, let's bunk off work this afternoon and go to the seaside!" But then I realised I have to work to live, so went back to the office :( lazyfish 24-03-2005, 07:52 If you do go to Cleethorpes via the M180 then pop a few Pro Plus or something. It's statistically the worst road in the country for falling asleep at the wheel - probably because it's so flat and featureless most of the way... _Ren 24-03-2005, 08:35 I went to Eyam (historic village) the other day...i walked and prayed that I had a car! It's where the plague hit up NOrth....sounds grim but very interesting...lots of things to see. Also...Sherwood Forest - home of Robin Hood YAY. Also yes for skegness! Roche Abbey too...not exactly sure where this is but internet will tell you i'm sure. Can you tell i think up places to go for when i finally get a car!! clogginchris 24-03-2005, 10:34 Roche Abbey is just outside Maltby, on the road to Oldcoates - definitely worth a visit CJ444 24-03-2005, 11:13 Derwent Valley (A57 to Manchester) with Ladybower/Derwent & Howden reservoirs is excellent. Many good walks all over. Particularly good is to turn right just after the viaduct on the A57 towards Fairholmes. Now on Sundays/Bankholidays you can't go further than Fairholmes carpark (has a little cafe & visitors' centre) but is an excellent base. See the magnificant Derwent Dam & the "Dambusters' Museum" completer with bouncing bomb in the Dam Turret. A regular shuttle bus will take you 3 miles up the closed road to the very top of the Derwet Valley to King's Tree. From here you can feel like you are right out in the middle of nowhere, excellent walks along the river or on top of Howden Moors. On a weekday / Saturday you can drive up the closed road and park at the very end at King's Tree and you may be lucky enough to have a whole days walk and not see a soul! IMO I would give Castleton a miss on public holidays as is so busy. Despite this is it worth a visit, has an excellent new visitors' centre and of course the Caverns (Peak Cavern (Devils Arse & largest natural cave entrance in the UK), Treak Cliff, Blue John & Speedwell (on a boat underground)). alchresearch 24-03-2005, 11:48 If you fancy somewhere without being hassled by the volume of tourist traffic to the usual places, I suggest this little trip I've done numerous times: Motorway up to the Humber Bridge Country Park. A leisurely walk across it to Barton on Humber with a nice meal in the pub which is a converted windmill (name sadly escapes me at the minute). Catch the bus back over the bridge to the car park at the visitor centre. Head on through Hull to Easington and Spurn Head - a gorgeous bit of coastline with some old war defences in the beaches and on the cliffs. Then a drive up the coast to Withernsea. ToryCynic 24-03-2005, 15:24 What about Grindleford? One of my favourite areas of the Peak District, and with the added bonus of the "grumpy" cafe... Alex wicko_boy 24-03-2005, 15:35 Yorkshire Sculpture Park: a few junctions up the M1 - FREE entry and nice cafe... beansforyou 24-03-2005, 20:07 Originally posted by amhudson119 What about Grindleford? What about Sheffield? I always found a drive to my local mcdonalds entertaining when I passed my test. Shiesh 25-03-2005, 20:24 As a North Easterner living in Sheffield I am somewhat baffled that everytime I chat with neighbours/colleagues/friends and they refer to having a run out from Sheffield they always tend to go South (Derbyshire/Nottingham) East (Cleethorpes/Skegness) or occasional to the North West (Manchester/Cheshire)!! Why not NORTH!!!!!! Within an hour or so of Sheffield you can be in Ripon, Thirsk, Pickering, York.....the list goes on and on!! If you are wanting a change over the Easter Holidays try it....you'll be glad you did!!!! saxon51 25-03-2005, 20:28 Peak District, no contest. Drive and drive..stop and play..drive..stop and eat...drive and admire scenery....stop and explore etc..etc. All within 20 miles of Sheffield and you can keep it up for hours on end without going further. Driving bliss, and no lousy, boring motorways. Rich 25-03-2005, 20:31 Yeah but the motorways'll be mobbed Bank Holiday weekend..
