I'm thinking of taking my laptop when I go to the states for dialling up.
Does anyone know how I'd go about this in America.

I can't exactly set up a dial up account in the UK and dial up over there now can I.

Cheers :D

Good old Compuserve used to give you dial-up numbers all around the world.

Here (http://www.net2roam.com/cgi-bin/portal?portalID=373125276&kw=international+isp) is one website that seems to offer what you want and if you Google with international+ISP or Global+ISP you will come up with similar ones.

Is it a new laptop? Do you have wifi?

As long as you have wifi in your laptop it will be cheaper, easier and faster to use wireless access points. They're all over in the US and often you can get on for free even. (legally) And if you can't find a free one well the standby is Starbucks which all have one and as you should know there's one on every corner ;)

You fancy helping me set it up to use while away?
I'm not so hot with setting wireless connections.

You can find dial access points all over the US, in public libraries, airports, train stations. and some hotel rooms. When booking a hotel, check with them to see if they have the facility. Welcome to the world's best vacation country.

Nothing to set up really! As long as you have the wifi installed and active it will automatically find any open networks and ask if you want to join them. If it's an access point that charges just open up your browser and it will take you to a secure page you can pay from with your credit card. I think all the Starbucks use T-Mobile so you could probably even get a 1 month subscription if you're going to be using it every day, check it out online it has all the details.

For free wifi there is a site somewhere with thousands of points listed but I'd have to google that. Really though if you're in the centre of a major city just crack your laptop open and you should be able to jump on a free network pretty easily. You can also download a stumbler program that will list all the available networks and whether you need a password or not.

Lastly, most hotels these days offer wifi in the lobby/cafe/business area and some in the rooms. There are some US chains that offer free wifi with the room too. Ask when you make your reservation, it's a common request :)

Edit: Here's the site with free WAP listings. It also includes airports/hotels etc. http://www.wififreespot.com/

Have you ever had a vacation outside of the US, buck?
Just interested. If so, did you like it/not like it.
How did it compare to the good old US of A ?

I left Sheffield in 1968, so I had a good few vacations outside the states. I was in the navy many years and though not on vacation there I lived in Cornwall many years plus a couple in Malta, and I would recommend both places. But I think what is unique about the US is its variety from New England to California, Maine to Florida, and Hawaii to Alaska, thousands of places to see and enjoy.

Go wifi.
I'm just sayin, I can't dial up in England on my american laptop. I found out later that there is some little incompatibilty that prevents it. (though, about an hour on the phone with BT, at like 50p a minute, gave no insight.) Be careful counting on that.

Wifi rocks. Starbucks and T-mobile charge a bunch and make you register but lots of independent coffee shops offer it for free with no hassle. Good luck!

Most ISPs have roaming agreements with other countires/ISPs. BT has an agreement through IPASS for WIFI within UK but i am sure they have for dialup as well.

I use IPASS but through another ISP(worked in EU and USA using same laptop), basically you just choose what country you are in and the city, and it finds available numbers you can dial using same username and password as at home.

The call charges are slightly higher, but its a usefull service.

Otherwise you can get pay as you use dialup accounts for free online.....
