View Full Version : Know any good pub gardens
tori_annie 23-03-2005, 13:40 With the nice weather setting in I got to thinking about pub gardens in Sheffield...........and............couldn't think of many, I work in central Sheffield and live over the Crookes/Walkley way does anyone know any good ones around these areas, cheers.
theadore 23-03-2005, 13:56 not too many... its a pity as bar one has a very nice beer garden but shuts down when the students leave.
the nottingham house in broomhill is alright... also the cobden view in crookes. also pubs like the ball put tables outside although not much of a garden to speak of.
best bet is get a 51 out to lodge moor and sit in the three merry lads or whatever its called... beer garden with a view
mjlacey21 23-03-2005, 14:21 In central sheffield the Red Lion - I think that's its name - has a nice beer garden. It's just up from the train station near National Centre. It's a funny little garden, but gets the sun on a hot day.

Are you thinking of the Rutland Arms? Thats by the NCPM (and close to the Red Lion), has a really nice garden around the back.
Hello tori_annie and welcome to the forum.
Funnily enough someone asked the same question about a year ago.
The thread is here :

Theadore, are you sure Bar one is closed. I'm sure we went there last easter during the holidays. It is one of the best beer gardens in sheffield. i love it!
Quite a few of the pubs in Walkley have beer gardens - nothing special but you can sit ouside in their garden at the Freedom, Florist, Palm and the pub opposite the Belle Vue - who's name escapes me at the momment despite walking past it twice a day!
Sheffield is not that great beer garden wise though...
Your best bet, go to the off licence and sit in the Peace Gardens with a bottle of cheap Perry. Sooo much fun for only £3 a bottle :thumbsup:
Red Lion just off Arundel Gate towards the Showroom as a conservatory and yard which is nice. Walkabout has a decent area and is always busy in summer. The upstairs terrace outside Witherspoons is nice if its open/you can get on it/no idiots or odd people out there.
Walkley and Crookes,
The Cobden view has a small yard, you can sit outside the Ball (front and back) -although dodgy things tend to be smoked out back :suspect: . There is also the grass next to it that gets full on a nice day.
The Walkley Cottage has a really nice walled off garden. The Springvale has a decent seating area around the back and they are meant to be clearing the grassed area below and making a seating area (when Andy gets round to it). Also the Closed Shop has a decent paved area.
Greenback 23-03-2005, 17:16 Get a tram to Shalesmoor and wander on down to the Fat Cat. Their beer garden is fantastic!

That's just mean. I think they should open it to the public during holiday time.
i luv it when a pub says `beer garden' and its 2 tables on concrete, chained to the floor with no grass in sight ahhhh how relaxing
GimmeSomePK 24-03-2005, 04:39 It may be a bit of a trek, but if anyones been to the Original Oak in Headingley, Leeds... Now THAT is a beer garden. Anything like that in Shef?

Dulo down near waitroses has a brilliant beer garden,and most of the time theyll be playing reggae n what not
Ousetunes 24-03-2005, 13:49 I'll forget the 'beer garden' tag and substitute it with 'outdoor drinking areas' - ie, places where you can sit outside.
Sportsman at Crosspool. Pleasant area round the back;
The Plough on Sandygate Road. Benches on the front and in previous summers they've had superb hanging baskets;
Bell Hagg. Not the best but superb views across to
The Rivelin Hotel. Great beer garden, yes, grass and even a slide!
Holly Bush near Malin Bridge. Relatively pleasant.
Shiny Sheff - it's going to be immensely improved with new decking outside. Again, cracking views and very pleasant of an evening.
Three Merry Lads - wonderful large grassed area, great for ball games. There are kiddies' slides and climbing frames too. The views are superb.
The Fulwood Inn has a nice area with plenty of benches. It's also surprisingly quiet, to say it's off Fulwood Road.
There are others, and even some in town, but not too many. If it 's a suntrap you're after, the tiny little yard behind the Brown Bear is a winner!
The Fairway? at birley has a nice garden where you can watch people playing golf

Bar One is apparently open from 5pm-11pm except for saturday the 2nd April when its from 7pm -11pm. Then from wednesday 6th it starts opening at 11am except for sundays (3pm).
TheWatcher 25-03-2005, 14:31 Washington has one, though it is unusable at the moment. However it is being completely refitted next month by Grolsch and will re-open on in a couple of weeks all being well.
Rutlands is great, easily the best in town.
mjlacey21 25-03-2005, 14:43 It was Rutland I meant - with the sign actually stating 'Award Winning Beer Garden' .
