Do you know why the trees were chopped down? It is possible that they were diseased and would have caused other serious problems had they not been removed. Still a shame though, and the place will undoubtedly look very bare.

All they told me when i rang was that they were no good. They looked fine to me though im no expert. They also have some money thats been giving to them to plant new trees and they say they will plant some new ones.Seems to me they needed to use this money up:suspect:

I went down one of the Hopefield roads the other day (not sure which one it's called - the one between Fox Lane and Birley Moor) and they've chopped all the trees down there too. They've planted new ones, but it's going to take years to get them to the size of the ones that were there before.

What's going to happen to all the wildlife that Dee's mentioned that lived in the ones where she lives............?

mmmm, I just hope that all these trees had a genuine reason to be removed. It does sound like it has happened it a few different areas..........I do hope that the Council are not just using up the Tree Felling budget before the end of the financial year just for the sake of it, ie trying to get rid of cash by blitzing lots of trees across the city.

Might explain why they've been to cut the grass round here for three weeks in a row....

Ah Ah sounds very much like the Tree/Gardening Dept has piles of dosh to get rid of before the end of the financial year in that case. Chances are, once the new year starts, you won't see a lawnmower for the rest of the summer. They have to work like this, otherwise they lose the money from next years budget. It's criminal really if this is the case.

I live at Shiregreen and they have chopped down a lot of trees on my road. Whilst I admit in some ways it is a shame to see trees removed, we have to look at the broader picture. The root span of a tree is I believe one and a half times the height of the tree, so we have to consider the damage this can do to the foundations of houses. Another point is the damage they do to pavements and drainage pipes.

A plus to the removal of these trees is the fact that it allows a lot more light into the houses and also street lighting at night is improved.

During the bad winds a few weeks ago, a lot of branches were brought down and telephone lines were also brought down.

The only problem with the council planting young trees to replace those removed is the fact that they will become a target for the vandals in the area.

My parents live near there, my father tells me the trees are coming down due to disease - they have been around since the estate was built, 60ish years ago (the trees that is - my folks are older). Is that old for your typical suburban tree?

The work on the trees in Frecheville is in part trying to catchup with the backlog of work. Its also in response to requests from residents to deal with the problem as roots are damaging paths, drives etc.
With regard to cutting the grass, there is an attempt to cut it earlier, and more often, to reduce the mass of clipings that are left behind once the grass gets longer before it's cut

The clippings have been an unsightly mess for years. Good to know they're remedying it. I notice this is your first post. Welcome to the Forum:thumbsup:

Damage to the paths eh! Do we think the council will dig up the roots and repair the paths once the trees are removed? Or, will the paths stay lumpy with trip hazards - possibly with tree stumps sticking up or even those nice squares of mud where the tree used to be?

Yeah, welcome bglodge.

I've noticed that they have taken out the trees in Barkers Pool, outside the City Hall. Why? They were reaching maturity and were softeninng up all that hard landscaping of paving and brick. I suppose it was too much to expect for the council to actually design the new look Barkers Pool around the existing trees? They may well plant new ones, but it will take them years to grow. Can you think of any other trees in the town centre?

The trees were here probably before us, we have trespassed we are kicking the trees out of there place where there supposed to be and im sorry but thats wrong, i know trees arnt like humans but i mean come on, they are chopping them down EVERYWHERE, they dont care. I'm not a tree huggger but come on there being a bit extreme arnt they.

Plus i hate to think of what animals and there babies they are kicking out of there homes, how would people like it if someone kicked them out of there home cause they needed to demolish it cause its getting in the way. I'm sorry but im against the idea.

just my two cents worth.

Contact your councillor, he will make a an enquiry on your behalf and find out the real reason why they are being removed.

The trees on highways are the resposibility of Streetforce and the ones in parks, woodlands and open spaces are the responsibility of Parks, Woodlands and Countryside.

The council dont have enough resources to cut down trees willy nilly so if they cut them down there is a good reason. Shefield council try to preserve trees in Sheffield where ever possible.

Many trees have preservation orders on them, and you need planning permmision to remove them. So dont chop down trees in your garden before checking or you could land yourself with a hefty fine.
