View Full Version : Can anybody help me?

I'm in a really unfortunate situation at the moment.

In a nutshell, my partner brought home a dog about 5 months ago and I fell in love with him- the dog that is. I'm a student and the dog was staying with my partner in his house and I was meant to be moving in there when my contract ran out. Unfortunately, he has decided to do a runner with everything I own and has abandoned the dog.

I really want to be able to keep him, but my currrent contract forbids it. I have somewhere that I can live with him as of 1st July, but wondered if anybody knows of anywhere that can provide a foster home for him temporarily? He is completey insured and very well behaved.

This whole thing is really upsetting me and I don't know what to do. Can anybody help me?

what breed is the dog?

do you have any family who may be able to help out?

Sorry to hear you are in this situation, it sounds awful :(. Have you tried talking to your current landlord about the situation? Maybe if they understood then they would let you keep him there? Do you have any friends or family members that might help out? Even if just for when the landlord needs to come round (which they have to give you 24 hours notice for!)

I don't know anyone that can foster him for you but I'm sure you will get someone to help you on here. To me it sounds like an ideal opportunity for someone to test out having a dog for a few months without making a lifetime commitment.

Also do you have anymore information about him? Size/breed/ok with other dogs etc

he's a lab cross whippet.

Most of my family have cats unfortunately or they would. I'v exhausted all options unfortunately. I've been keeping him against my contract for about 6 weeks, but as extremely bad as my luck is, we were burgled over the easter period so there's people from my estate agents in and out all the time, so not sure how long I can keep him a secret for. There's three other people living here and I've got their bonds to think about as well as mine.

how approachable is your landlord, and is he crate trained?

redpixierose
16-04-2008, 14:15
It's an estate agent that handles the property so we don't actually know who the landlord is.

Our estate agents aren't very good to be honest. They're generally quite arrogant and unhelpful. Plus, I don't think it's their call whether we can keep a pet or not- yet they won't put me in touch with the landlord. We've tried before.

redpixierose
16-04-2008, 14:17
If crate trained is the same as house trained then yea. I don't know all the terminology, sorry. He is a really good dog. He's only a year old so he's got plenty of energy, but he's a lot of fun and never any trouble.

I really don't want to be away from him for even two months, but I can't see any other option really.

If he were fostered by someone who lives near me I would still be able to take him for walks and stuff and I'd still buy all his food and take him to the vet etc.

Aw I wish I could help out but have got dogs in and out over the next couple of months...

Is he good with other dogs?

redpixierose
16-04-2008, 14:22
he's generally anxious with other dogs at first, but then gets used to them and is fine. we were staying with my friend for 2 weeks over easter and she has a female staffi. They got on fine after an hour of being together. He's an absolutely non aggressive dog thankfully. He does tend to bark a lot when he first meets a dog though.

Strix

so where abouts are you based? lets see if we can get somebody near you to do a dog share?

Will somebody please tell me that 3 dalmatians and a whippet x lab will be too much in my semi detached house... otherwise I'm going to end up babysitting while my mum's away!!!!

redpixierose
16-04-2008, 14:39
I'm in S10. I'm still able to walk him three times a day and look after him as much as I can. I just can't keep him in my house. :(

Strix
16-04-2008, 14:40
well lets look at how far we've got to run with this...

how old is this dog btw, and how much can he cope with being passed from pillar to post?

Moonbird
16-04-2008, 14:43
What an awful situation to be in, what area is s10?

Lotti
16-04-2008, 14:43
Oh bugger it!!!

redpixierose I'm in S10 - if you're able to walk him I may be able to persuade my mum that it's a good idea for him to live with us on a temporary basis IF and it's a big IF - he gets on with my grumpy old bugger of a dog. (He was fine when Gadget came to stay).

What is he like in the house during the day? If he's going to be as little trouble as possible then it may be ok as mum's away for most of May anyway - just have to persuade her that June would be ok with two dallies, a border collie and yours....

PM me if you want to discuss it :)

Lotti
16-04-2008, 14:46
You're a meanie Lindsey!!!

It's not really upto me, it's my mum's house so totally upto her but I can do the puppy eyes and try to persuade her! (Plus she's away for most of May anyway ;) )

I was relying on you to be the sane voice of reason for me!

Been to RSPCA at Chesterfield today to see the poor little dawgeez - nearly came home with two Yorkies, a gewerjus Jack Russell and a blonde Akita.

Only didn't cos the person who drove me there said I'd have to walk home if I came out with so much as a sniff of a dog...Spoilsport!

If no one is able to help you personally which would be a better option. It may be worth contacting a few boarding kennels and see if they can help. You may also be able to still walk him everyday.

I cannot think of any other solution if none of the kind members of this forum can help.:D

I cannot help as I have a houseful of cats and dogs and a three year old son as it is.

This is sounding really positive folks- I wish I could help, but other half (and dog) would leave home if I brought another canine home with me - fingers crossed something can be sorted out, he sounds lovely and if redpixie can still see him and spend quality time with him, it won't feel like such a long time before thy can be back together again

I reckon we could do it between us, so that Lotti doesn't have the dog all the time I mean.

Depends on how much the dog would cope with being passed around, as Strix said earlier. Then again, it's a better option than losing him to rehoming and the stress of kennels (you can tell I've been to the RSPCA can't you?)

Answer your texts Strixy!

well that was more what I was aiming for if possible - I can't do the full 3 months, and that would be long enough for a dog to think it has a new home!
Lotti can do pretty much all of May, so if we each did a month? - even if it was fortnightly?

The pink one I found in the shed - the one with the old sleeping bag in it that Clive will not now leave alone - just the three sleeping areas in the house now then...and still can't keep off the darned setee!

Hey guys. Just been out for a walk with Lotti and Takara and they seemed to get on with Rowdy (aptly named I think) well enough.

I'm so touched that you're all trying so hard to help me out. It really means a lot. I don't know how he would react to being moved around so much. It's difficult to know. He stayed with a friend of mine with and without me fotwo weeks over easter and he was absolutely fine so he may be that he is OK with it.

I don't know. I just have to keep reminding myself that this is the last time that we'll ever have to be separated for more than a few days.

Lotti
16-04-2008, 17:29
Well my mum's home but I'm waiting for the right moment... maybe over dinner...

The nice thing is, redpixierose and I live very close so I wouldn't have to walk Rowdy (which is the argument my mum normally has against having dogs) and redpixierose could actually help me with the temps I've got coming too!

The good thing is, he aint big and he aint black which means he's got a higher chance of getting in Eddy's good books (and, if he comes to stay Takara will leave Eddy alone for a while!).

We've got a secure garden which Eddy doesn't really use so that's one place that Rowdy and T can go to to let Eddy have some peace and quiet.

So... now that I've rehearsed my arguments... I'll try and broach it with mum at dinner!

Have just PM'd you Rosie. Let's hope it DOES work out. The main thing is to keep you and your dog together in the long term, so anything we can do short term, we will!

Clivey has been good with the previous 3 dogs I have introduced him to - as long as it's not bigger and bossier than him then we should have no problems.

Please just tell me that Rowdy doesn't like digging??? Even with a gravelled garden my nutty terrier manages to dig up all the freshly planted patio pots just to hide a chewy toy. God knows who from - I'm sure I don't want to deprive him of a soggy rawhide chew!

redpixierose
16-04-2008, 17:39
lol. no, he's not into digging.
I doubt he's bigger and he's not a bossy dog. when he's inside he's really sedate and calm, but when he's outside he definitely lives up to his name. He likes to make his presence known anyway:)

I've only just noticed this thread too.....

Good job I didn't see it earlier cos I sooooooo want to help and could already hear myself trying to peruade OH in my head... :hihi:

I'm so glad Lotti has come to the rescue because I am in such a rubbish position to be able to help anyway :( I work full time and all weekends in May are choc-a-bloc going somewhere or other. Not to mention that Gadget is a spoilt 'only dog' who doesn't like seeing his mummy being unfaithful to him ;)

I am still trying to work out the logistics of any use I can be... keep us up to date with how everything is going :)

Can we see some pics of Rowdy? He sounds lovely

Awww  he's beautiful!

He sounds a bit like Gadget - when he's out on a walk he's a nutter with tons of energy; when at home he's the laziest, sleepiest dog I've ever met! must be the whippet in them.

Well good luck with everything - it will be worth it in the end!
I've been wanting to catch up for a walk with Lottie for a while, so if he meets Gadget & they get on with each other then perhaps I could help out a bit on an ad hoc basis if Lottie (or her mum!) needs a break at some point xx

Thanks hun. I've got two leant up against the back door, which, with any luck will fit in my car but Rowdy's not used to being crated and Takara will be very unimpressed if I bring in another dog and it means she has to be crated! But if we need to go down that route then we do, and if the crates fit in the back of the car, I may need to borrow yours, but hopefully we won't need it.

Katie - you know I'm always up for a walk, and when the weather gets nicer it'll be nice to sit outside the Dam House again so we shall have to have a catch up!
