I don't know whether this is any help. But when I moved house within Sheffield I was able to keep the same number. Not sure if thats what you mean. Or if you can keep same number when moving city.

If you mean "keeping your current phone number", then it is possible but not guaranteed.

The BT pages tell you what to do here. (http://www.bt.com/mc/mc_home.jsp?showsub=customer_service&showsub2=CS_Moving_home&showsub3=MH_common_questions&obsType=LINK&obsOID=28457&vStore=1316&obsPage=/mc/mc_home.jsp&obsNoSee=Y)

If you are staying within the same BT exchange area, then it's no problem to keep your number. If you are moving to an area serviced by a different exchange then you will be given a new number.

If the exchange area is the same then fine.... par exampler... Sharrow to Sharrow or say, Greenhill to Greenhill or Sheffield Central to Sheffield Central. If not (e.g. Meadowhall to Fulwood or lets say Ecclesfield to Hillsborough) then no its not possible to transfer your telephone number. There is a service called Ceased Number Intercept CNI. Its £25 per qtr and there is a recorded announcement on your old telephone number onnouncing your new one. Alternativley, Remote Call Forwarding (or "RCF") is a call forwarding service from your old number to your new number. It's £100 per quarter! Plus the cost of the diverted call. So, more of a BT business customer offering me thinks.

I have always found BT very helpful when it comes to such matters. I also believe in British, BA, British Gas etc etc.... you may pay a slight premium - but altogether its the best way I feel in order to ensure a quality service in return. I looked the numbers up for you. For BT Residential Sales, its 0800800150 and Business Sales is 0800400400.

Good luck!

Phone contract a long-time contract? Doesn't sound like BT then?

I know minimum contract term for lines on BT are 12 months. Business customers can go 3 years or 5 years with 5% and 10% discounts on rental!

if u register with the following company they will give you a free 0870 number (which does not charge you or your callers)this can then be allocated to any landline number you have.
it wont get you a bt short term deal but could benefit you in having your calls rerouted to wherever you are without having to keep issuing different phone numbers.

The minimum contract for BT if you are the absolute first person to newly install a line is 12 months, but a cancellation fee can be paid of about £20.

If it is not a new line, then the minimum contract is 3 months.
