View Full Version : IP address + email....
BobDaBuilder 23-03-2005, 10:24 I am getting e-mail off someone who claims to be my old man (Who I haven't spoken to in 8yrs) and just want to know if there is a way of obtaining an IP address from the header and if so would they match up...? the thing that may cause problems is that my old man <Maybe> emails me from Yahoo and everybody else emails me from their ISP email....EG: Blueyonder, AOL etc....?
If it can't be done in this way is there a way of doing it.....?
PS: I'm doing this through either hotmail or Outlook (Not Express)
Unfortunately not...
In Outlook, if you right click on the message in the inbox & choose options, you will see (down the bottom) soomething like...
Received: from 111.111.111 (111.111.111 [their mail server's IP Address])
by 222.222.222 (x.xx.xx/x.xx.xx)
111.111.111.111 is their mail server (so if it's from yahoo it'll say)
222.222.222.222 is your mail server.
You can at least check that it IS from a yahoo box, rather than a spoofed email address...
Lickable 23-03-2005, 11:02 Have you read the email?
Do you want to speak with him?
You could email him and ask to see a recent photo.
If your cause for concern is viruses, check it at a public computer.
BobDaBuilder 23-03-2005, 11:59 Yeah, i've spoken to him on a number of occasions and alls fair he has sent a recent photo and he does seem to know things that others don't know but on the neg' side of things there is the small matter that I am being hunted by another member of my family...and there is another member of my family (Not blood related...he's my nephew and neices dad) that I do keep in touch with and I want to be 100% sure that it's not him trying to drag me into a back alley so to speak....
Basically I haven't told the dad of the kids that I am in touch with my old man incase things go back but I just want to be 100% certain that it's not him posing as my old man for info...There must be a way of matching an IP from an email header, I thought it was sent via their ISP server no matter what email client they use but have now become aware that this isn't the case...???

sicubitt 30-03-2005, 12:53 Yeah, if he is your dad, he will know you better than you might think.

This is not always the case.
When I eventually met my biological father (after over 18 years absence) I found I had nothing in common with him and he knew absolutely nothing about me!

I would suggest that the normal rules of Internet meeting apply here. If you are going to meet this person claiming to be your dad, meet them in a public place, take a friend (they can stay a safe distance away if you prefer) to keep an eye on you and step in if things go horribly wrong.
Dont give out any details about yourself like your address etc....im sure you know all this anyway
It is not my place to pry, but why would anyone want to take you into a back alley to chat? You seem like a nice person to me?

It was a figure of speech...lol...but thanks anyway.
As for meeting, well that's not on the cards and i'm pretty capable of holding my own...The story of my suspicion is a very, very long story and I would be kicked off the forum if I went in2 detail (Which i'm not about too as I don't know any of you)
