The news that minor roads in Sheffield will only be repaired every 200 years has come as a relief to those motorists who thought it was every 300 years. A Sheffield Council Spokesperson said,
" In any event this problem will solve itself. As more and more motorists are forced off the roads , then , obviously there will be less wear and tear to repair. That rhymes , doesn't it ? Ha Ha Ha.
Also , in 200 years time we are hoping that vehicles will be travelling hovercraft style above the surface ----so that's that.
To solve the problem in the short term----or rather , to LOOK at the problem in the short term , Sheffield Council representatives will be meeting for 6 weeks with various Councils in the U.K. to exchange ideas and explore parameters. The meeting will take place in the Bahamas and we will get a lot done "
A Spokesperson for the Car Owners Association said ,
" This takes my breath away. The last time I saw a bus round these parts , it was horse-drawn. We need our cars. It's damned dangerous too. Only last year my elderly mother disappeared down a huge pot-hole and we haven't seen her since."

You forgot to point out, that whilst we're busy looking out for potholes in the roads and loose paving slabs, we're not having to notice the monstrosities the council plop down everywhere, and call 'art'.

So really we owe them one

200 years!
=======

SHEFFIELDERS can expect minor roads in the city to be resurfaced only once every 200 years.
That is almost four times longer than the national average.
The revelation underlines Sheffield's reputation as a "pothole city" and gives further ammunition to those who claim the council is anti-car.
It means if your road was resurfaced recently, at the present rate it probably won't get done again until the year 2205.
According to the Asphalt Industry Alliance the average road should be resurfaced every 10 to 20 years. The current average figure for local roads in England is 51 years.
Council chiefs in Sheffield admit the situation is so serious they would need to spend £15 million every year on potholes alone just to "tread water" and stop roads getting worse.
Currently the council spends £4.9 million per year on carriageway and footway surfacing and repairs.
It points out that its record on resurfacing principal roads in the city is better - but even they are resurfaced only every 39 years.
Mike Finn, project manager at community transport organisation Transport 17 said: "It is absolutely abysmal. All Street Force do is come around and put little patches on here and there and little bits of yellow paint. Some roads are just like patchwork quilts. Look at Mickley Lane in Totley or Woodseats Road - they are terrible."
Transport 17, based on Baslow Road, Totley, runs a small fleet of minibuses to take pensioners and disabled people on treats.
"We have passengers who have had hip replacements who are always complaining to the drivers about the bumps in the road," added Mr Finn. "But there is nothing the drivers can do to avoid the potholes - they are everywhere."
Brian Gregory, chairman of the Association of British Drivers, said the situation was unacceptable.
He said: "I didn't realise Sheffield was as bad as that. Once in every 200 years is absolutely scandalous, just appalling. And of course what happens is you end up getting into this vicious cycle where you have to pay out compensation to car drivers."
A spokesperson for Sheffield Council said: "We are aware of the problem with the condition of the road network, which is a national as well as a local problem. Over recent years, where possible, additional funding has been put into various aspects of highway maintenance to begin to make improvements.
"Over the last three years highway maintenance spending has increased by £1.6 million. Within this, the total spending on carriageway and footway surfacing and repairs is now £4.9 million per year.
"To maintain the city's road network in terms of surfacing and repairs, in line with the recognised codes of practice, would require an annual budget of £15 million.
"The current level of funding allows surfacing to be carried out every 39 years on the city's principal road network."
The Department for Transport said: "Since 2000 we have doubled funding to local authorities for road maintenance and the latest National Road Maintenance Condition Survey results suggest that the Government was on course to halt road deterioration by 2004.
"The Government provided £660 million for local highway maintenance for 2005/06."

I'm waiting for the next council project. First there was traffic lights everywhere, then mini-roundabouts and then stone cobbled junctions.
