I always used to hate Beetroot but recently I have discovered that I now love it. I can't get enough of it. Has anyone else acquired any tastes that they were known to previously dislike. Can anyone explain what would cause this to happen?

I was the same with tomatoes until I was in my 20s. Couldn't bear them but now have them with most meals. I think it's something to do with your tastebuds maturing or dying, I'm not sure.

Did you give up smoking? That brings your taste buds back to life. Things taste and smell better.

Weird you should bring this up because it has recently happened to me!

I turned vegetarian when I was 12 and even before that never ate bacon because I didn't like it. I was vegetarian for about 11 years and then vegan for 10 months, and then all of a sudden I went chicken mad and literally ate nothing but chicken for about 6 weeks.

I figured my veggie days were over, so started eating meat again. But I never had bacon cos I *knew* I hated it.

But over the years I had quite a collection of food that I hated, brussels sprouts being an obvious one, but also toast, bananas, ham, and bacon.

A couple of months ago I decided to try and eat each of those things to see whether I actually did still hate them or not. With the obvious exception of brussels sprouts as they are pure evil.

So I tried toast, still didn't like it.

Bananas - as absolutely disgusting as I remember.

Ham... surprisingly nice

and then bacon... and since then I have gone completely mad for it!! It takes a lot of effort to not find myself at the sandwich shop every day for a bacon and egg buttie. I can't understand why I hated it in the first place, and I can't believe I deprived myself of something so delectable for so long!!

Weirdly though, I might hate stuff that everyone likes (toast and bananas) but I do like stuff that a lot of people hate - olives, marmite, mustard etc.

Try a good mature Cheddar and beetroot sandwhich - my mother started me off on these in the early fifties, when she packed my school lunch - I still love them after fifty years.

An excellent cheese - I lived in Canada for twenty-four years, on and off - and it was one of my favourite cheeses - it grills very well too.

I've never actually considered grilling it before. Something else I shall have to try.

Try:
A light layer of marge or butter on a medium slice of good bread
A thin layer of ketchup on top.
Sprinkle a very small amount of garlic pwd, oregano and basil.
Add slices of cheddar and a couple of slices of tomato on top.
Grill:

Then serve with:
Heated Heinz beans, fried sliced mushrooms and a couple of rashers of grilled or fried bacon.
A fried or hard-boiled egg
A leaf of lettace.

Add some Hendersons relish to the beans and/or mushrooms, bacon and egg (if fried).

Enjoy!

Sounds mouth watering. All noted.

Tell me, are these your own initiatives?

Yes, it originally began at home as a teenager - just the grilled cheese and beans - and has been (no pun intended) my staple diet for most of my life.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I travelled for thirty-two years, and during the times that I lived on my own I found that it's a quick and easy meal - which I've never tired of - so I developed 'variations on a basic theme' so-to speak.

Nothing strange IMO. I think Pancakes can be eaten with almost anything.

I think that's called Bruchetta. Mmmmmm Sounds good.
I want to know, what do you do with the lettuce?
Beans, bacon and egg I can understand. But lettuce? Hmm?

My own concoction actually has a name! So, I guess, great culinary-minds must think alike!

If anything, I’d be tempted to call it a ‘Barryetta’ – or ‘Grilled Cheese Plus’ – depending on the type of restaurant it was being served in.

The lettace is:
1. for any pet burrying rodents scurrying around the house.
2. to balance the plethora of colours seen at the least refracted end of the electro-magnetic spectrum.
3. for people who like lettace.
4. for garnish.

I could, of course, suggest what you can do with the lettace …
