View Full Version : HELP NEEDED! Sheaf House/Other empty buildings/factories etc
Hey. Really hope someone here can help, or point me in the right direction.
my friend and I have been taking photographs for about 8 months, just getting into the swing of things, mooching around Sheffo finding interesting buildings & places to photograph.
Anyway, we're both really into photographing old derelict buildings and factories rather than beautiful landscapes (though they're nice too...) and really want to get inside Sheaf house for a few hours to photograph the interiors, also any other derelict offices, factories, churches etc etc. I dunno, so many of these places are being torn down, turned into fancy flats, we want to capture some of the charm and character we see in them.
So - does anyone know who to contact, or know of anywhere else we could try? We don't want to go breaking into places, so if anyone has contact details, security firms, or suggestions it'd be most appreciated, and i promise to show you the end results.
post here, PM or email me at emailbunn@yahoo.com
cheers!!!
The building has been bought by Sheffield First using money from Yorkshire Forward.
okay - so would Sheffield First be the best people to try? I was sort of hoping someone might know the security guard, or have a friend of a friend or something.....but it's cool - i'll give them a try as well.
anyone else?
WallBuilder 23-03-2005, 06:17 Derelict factories? Without having to break in I can think of two that are stood with doors gaping and so fairly accessible. Take a wander to the railway bridge at the bottom of Woodseats road and have a look at the two buildings on either side of the road, Wardsons and Tool and Steel Products.
SUPERTYKE 23-03-2005, 16:42 As a fellow 'snapper' I most certainly dig your interest in old and deri' buildings. This is a big secret that I'm about to divulge so don't bandy it around too much!
I believe these buildings were part of a hospital many moons ago, there are open doors, so no need to break anything, though there may be a bit of a fence to stride over. The place is surrounded by fields and interesting lanes.
So, how to get there. A car would be useful though not essential. You will need to get to the Norton ave/bochum parkway roundabout. Then look for 'Lightwood Lane .It is at the top of there, easy. The place looks really amazing, I've not been there myself yet so you could send me a report if you go!
Happy snapping!

Hey, just thought i'd update for anyone interested - my friend and I have managed to find several places of interest, namely the Union Carbine Caron Rod plant (great place), the old womens hospital opposite the University and a few abandoned factories out by Meadowhall.
some pictures can be found on my deviant art page:
lordbunn.deviantart.com
i'll be updating it soon with recent pics.
HOWEVER......i've kinda run out of places - short of travelling outside Sheffield so once again, if anyone knows of any derelict/abandoned buildings, old office buildings or anything.
* Whats the story behind Seville House by Spital Hill? Looks interesting...
* anyone know any security guards that maybe patrol/have access to places of interest?
Just to reaffirm, we're just amateur photographers interested in capturing places before they're either torn down, or turned into flats/faceless bars etc. For us, there's a subtle beauty in the state of these places. maybe that's weird....:-)
cheers!
I don't think it's weird at all Bonny, I think it's important that some sort of record is maintained of these buildings before they are demolished/converted.
You could also check out the Star for details of planning permission and also commercial property auctions. The details will lead you to the current owners and future plans for the buildings.
The old school/community centre near me has recently been demolished and I regret not getting any photo's before it went.
If you are interested in finding buildings which are to be demolished or converted then you should probably contact the planning department and look at the planning lists. These will tell you who the agent acting for the owner is and they may agree to arrange access for you.
If the building is interesting (from a historical or archaeological point of view) or listed then the archaeological service are likely to have arranged for it to be recorded prior to any development work happening.

I'm glad to see your post again.
Its great that you chacked out the Union Carbine works! Ace innit. I passed the site a while ago and wondered if you'd ever managed to get in there.
Did you explore much of the surrounding area?
The old Bachelors factory and office block are just up the hill from the Union Carbine site, just through the railway bridge.
The factory block alongside the railway has recently been demolished, as it was collapsing, but the office block is still standing. Albeit a bit worse for wear. Think a lot of kids from Fox Hill frequent it, hense the smoke damage and smashed glass.
Unfortunately the link you provided is blocked at work, so I'll have a look when I get home tonight.

Great stuff, I'm glad it's not just me that is into this sort of stuff.
If you want to photograph the sterling works, then contact these people.

we had a bit of a shifty around the site, but its very difficult to tell whats in use and whats not - even some battered old factories are in contant use.
We didn't carry on up the hill through the bridge....lord knows why! but we'll probably go back this weekend and check that site out. thanks for all your help!
If you drive up Loxley valley there are two sets of deserted factories, plus the corn mill, plus Loxley Chapel.

You can't get into the factories now, they've been fenced off as some kid had a nasty accident back in June and is persuing a claim against the new owners.
