View Full Version : Campaign Against the 52 Bus Service
pugonamug 22-03-2005, 20:17 Hey everyone! I'm quite new on here and very very very sorry to bring this age old topic up yet again (bus drivers never cease to amaze me!) but I need some help with a campaign I am starting against the way in which bus drivers are allowed to discriminate against students in particular, or just about anyone they please.
This is following one very nasty experience I had on the No 52 YTR bus service to Hillsborough recently. After experiencing a number of incidents with bus drivers, muttering things under their breath, refusing to stop where you requested, buses that are 'every 10 minutes' turning up 55 minutes later, being rude in general etc I decided to actually get off my bum and stop moaning and start doing something! Bus drivers need to start realising that they are being paid to provide a service, advertisements looking for bus drivers ask for cheerful, polite persons who love people ... where are all these people??? This is not a slur on every bus driver I've come across, just the majority, but one driver can actually make the difference between starting your day on a good or bad note. Like at a supermarket, the checkout assistants are the last impression you have of that supermarket.
I just needed to clarify that it isn't just me that bus drivers (on the No 52 YTR especially, and First No 52 and 51) don't like! Well maybe it is, but if anyone has experienced the same sort of nasty, snide, sarcastic comments it would be much greatly appreciated as the company won't think I'm mad!
Thanks! mel x
D'oh... Someone else who hates bus drivers :loopy:
The 52 is like, THE most reliable bus route in Sheffield, cos the Crookes to Woodhouse and back route is full of students who need reliable bus services.
So what if the driver doesn't act sociable? He gets paid to drive buses, not chat with customers.
pugonamug 22-03-2005, 20:40 I get paid to serve chickens ... I am also threatened with the sack if I actually dare to mutter something unsociable to a customer. I am absolutely sick to death of people making excuses for bus drivers, there is no excuse for rudeness. They work with people, what gives them the right to treat their customers like dirt. Would you do it? I sincerely hope not. I would like to think that anyone else who works with the public has the decency to treat those people with respect. You are entitled to your opinion and I don't begrudge that, but don't ridicule my opinions.
As a passenger, I've not experienced any really miserable drivers of the 52 (Woodhouse/Crookes) bus service. One was really heavy on the accelerator and brake and I felt really :gag:
by the time I got into town.
As a car driver I've experienced some very polite drivers (who thank me when I let them out etc) and some others who think they should be the only people allowed on the road.
pugonamug 22-03-2005, 21:04 Hey guys, I really am overreacting on the whole bus issue aren't I? I'm sorry, I just get caught up in the moment ... I was so angry before, just read over my posts and realised I sounded a right fool, as you've probably guessed I'm not too impressed with the public transport service! I'm gonna take a couple of prozac and go have a lie down I think!
Have a good day :)

sheffieldfox 22-03-2005, 21:35 I am a student who lives in Crookes and have to DISAGREE with every point you have made. I have a First bus pass so travel daily to and most days from uni on the 52 service.
I lived in Hunters Bar last year and only had the No. 50 running down from West St. in that direction and that only ran once every half an hour so I really appreciate the short interval of time you have to wait for the 52.
Its only on the odd occasion I have to wait any more than 10 minutes and I can put up with that because more often than not they arrive at least every 5 minutes.
Now I know your main point was about the Yorkshire Terrier service but again I do catch these on the odd occasion when I am in a hurry and just catch the 1st 52 bus that comes along, and I have to say I have no problem with their service either (other than the leg room on the bus as I'm a tall chap!).
As for the staff, I've never had any issues with any member of staff employed by First or Yorkshire Terrier and have found them very cheerful on most occasions, something which I and I am sure most people would struggle to keep up in their line of work. In all the times I have travelled on the 52 as well I can't recall even one single incident where I have witnessed a passenger having a conflict with a bus driver for any reason.
So overall, I know they don't get much praise but this is a well deserved thank you from a regular passenger to the bus services in Sheffield.
I was on a 41 last night, when the bus got to scummy top, sorry i mean Manor Top,the driver pulled up opened the door, and got an egg thrown at the protective screen for no reason what so ever. They then proceeded to throw eggs at the windscreen.
The driver was very calm throughout this, one thing that did get my back up a bit, and was that not one passenger asked if he was alright.
And you wonder why some are grumpy.
One more thing should we have a Super Bus driver thread,or even a dedicated Forum!

But surely Customer Interaction comes with a little politeness ?
Its been a while since I caught a bus in all honesty, as a driver I've never had a problem with one, they let me out I let them out, simple as really
Bus drivers eh?...Where would we be without them?

Hello, Victor Meldew. I am an ex bus driver of quite a few years experience. Yesssss, ther are a few 'grumpy' 'not very nice ' bus drivers around, but PLEASE realise that the drivers of today have far more pressures put on the these days. They ahve to put up with verbal & physical abuse, people trying to get awy without paying their fayre, and unfortunatlkey, students are as much to blaim as anyone. As for the services running late, the drivers don't do that purposely, but have to deal with very busy traffic conditions and have to TRY to keep to times which are worked out, I believe, when there is no traffic about. S PLEASE, have a bit of patience and try to remember, there is two sides to every story
you even get the mad old singing bus driver on the YTR 52. What more could you ever want?
lets be frank a lot of the 52 and 123 bus drivers are quite bonkers:D . I wouldn't complain to them
Never had any problems with the drivers on the 52 when I've got it. If you don't like it, you could always not give your money to them and walk it. If I'm reading the first post correctly and you're a student getting the 52 to Hillsborough, it's a 30 minute walk from the Uni (I guess the 52 isn't that much quicker). Plus you can then spend the money on Bacardi Breezers ;)
