View Full Version : Horse riding lessons - south Sheffield?
Hi everyone
I know someone posted an enquiry about riding lessons near city centre and were directed to the riding school at Grenoside - I've been told there is also one somewhere near Penistone. But I live a bit far away from there, and would really like to try horse riding. Haven't done it before so have no idea of the prices etc - does anyone know of riding schools in the south Sheffield area, or possibly Chesterfield/Dronfield? Any experience of lessons there?
I'd love to try it in the next few months but sometimes get put off by what I hear about it being expensive, and easier if you have your own horse - there's no way I can get a horse any time soon, unfortunately - is it possible to learn and enjoy riding without owning a horse and/or going bankrupt?
Advice appreciated from any horse-loving folk on here - thank you:)
Hi, a very good place is Bradway Grange farm, this is where i learnt and as far as i know (unless they have changed) they offer group lessons on saturday and sunday mornings and also private lessons. The teaching is very good and the horses are lovely. They also have lots of horses so will find a suitable horse for you. when i used to help out there the lessons were twice as long and half the price of the other stables i was aware of. It's a great place and i would recommend it. Best thing would be to give them a ring. Their website is www.springvalecarriages.co.uk it will give you their phone number and address. Hope that helps.
Thank you for that, just called and a guy said the riding school is next door, but didn't have the number! He said it's called something like 'Merriment'/'merry men' (?????)
It doesn't seem to be in the phone book and sounds great as is close to where I'm moving to, and not expensive - perfect!
Do you know anything else about them, just so I could try and look them up?
Thanks:)
Just found the number for Border View farm, apparently it's them that have the riding school, and someone going to ring me back this afternoon! Hope it's the same place you described!
Yes i hope so? Well good luck i hope you enjoy your lessons :)
Thank you! Someone called me back, they are only doing lessons at weekends at the moment but they do seem very good value and just down the road from me! Hoping to start soon:)
how much are the lessons?
Right...lessons are £18 for a group one (1hr) or £21 for a private one (also an hour, much better value than the other schools I've contacted! You may as well go for a one-to-one with only £3 difference!) The downside (for me anyway at the moment) is they only do lessons at weekends, mostly Saturday and can do Sunday morning. I can dig out the mobile number of the lady who rang me and let you know if you like.
That sounds like the right place! im guessing it was either jayne or maurine you spoke to. it's a great place to get involved with i went there for years, used to help out with the lessons every weekend and then hang out there all day and go for a ride in the afternoon it was brilliant. I really hope you enjoy it :)
Thank you I hope so too, just hope I get a new job that will mean I can afford it! I actually spoke to Katie, I think she's the owner's daughter? She was very helpful:)
Hi, Bradway Grange definatly do lessons and there not expensive. I would steer clear of Borderview from what i've heard.
Also, have you tried Cowley Riding School an Holmesfield? There great and do lessons in the week aswell as weekends. There is mainly group lessons but they do private aswell. I've been going there 6 years! Its not too expensive compared with others (£17 an hour group lesson, not sure if its more for adults) but there is a waiting list. Number is 01142890356. :)
Thanks for that! Why would you steer clear of Border View ? They seem to be the ones I'be spoken to, and when I rang what I thought was Bradway Grange Farm I was told 'the riding school is next door, at Border View'? Confused now:confused:
Would definitely try the school at Holmesfield, too.:)
Hmm, thats strange, she definatly does do lessons at Bradway Grange because i go up there a few times a week and i've see her do them. il ask for you :)
as for borderview, iv heard some of the people up there arent very nice and that they dont take care of their animals properly. it might just be from someone who had a bad experience but just to be sure id double check.

Thanks for that! I may have just got confused with the farm names. It doesn't help that both do riding lessons (or do they?? you know what I mean:))
I am a"young" 40 year old adult who would love to learn to horse ride. I have been on a horse a few years ago but have never had lessons so would ideally like one to one tuition with someone who is obviously very knowledgeable but also friendly and patient. Can anyone offer some recommendations please, I live S20 way and it would have to be at weekends. Thanks
