View Full Version : Hygiene at Virgin Gym, Heeley!!!

Went for a swim at Virgin Gym tonight at 9pm, and was shocked to see two lots of excrement lying at the side of the swimming pool! I don't know how long it had been there???
the pool was fairly quiet but i was surprised no one else had drawn attention to it.
I summoned the pool attendent who casually washed it away down the overflow grid at the side of the pool with some water from the pool, and then left, no disinfectant or any thorough cleaning. when i asked him if he was going to clean it properly he said that it would be dealt with by the night cleaners!!!
i then questioned the receptionist about it, and her response was 'funny you should say that, someone else found some earlier in the main pool, don't worry the night cleaners will deal with it'!!!

call me old fashioned, but it all seemed a bit casual to me, i returned home feeling nauseous and will probably cancel my membership tomorrow after 3 years as a member.

Yuk,I was seriously considering joining next week, but I'm definately put off now.
I was a bit dubious already though,as I recently went with my sister, and was surprised that very few people were sitting on towels in the sauna and steam room areas,as the signs ask you to.There was also an older man on the sun loungers with a mobile phone, call me paranoid but I have a strong suspicion,(which could be completely wrong)that he was taking photos.

It's not pleasant, granted, but a swimming pool is in essence a large vat of dilute bleach so I wouldn't worry too much.

We`re all members in our house, got to say I have never seen anything like this. I do know that they had to close the pool a few weeks ago when a girl had a poo in it, but like I say they shut the pool.
They arn`t going to close the pool if the poo is not even in the water(theres no need is there) they cleaned it up, and like halibut said, chlorine is in the water to kill bacteria so I really shouldn`t worry about the germs left(unless you`re planning on licking the affected area:P)
I don`t understand why the person(on parents of the person) that did it didn`t clean it up or ask for assistance. Who do you think the dirty buggers are?:suspect:

15-04-2008, 08:01
Aren't there regulations against this? A few years back I was a member at S10 Health and I turned up to go swimming one day. I was told by the girl behind the counter that the pool was closed that day due to a little kid pooing in it. She said that whenever such an incident occurred, they had to close the pool for 24 hours in order to clean it.

Is this just a process that S10 Health have, or is it an actual regulation that they have to abide by?

Some of the germs that cause particularly nasty stomach bugs aren't killed by the chemicals in the pool.

What's more alarming is that the gym gets this sort of client. I have been a member at both Virgin and Esporta, I do see Virgin clean more than Esporta did but Esporta has more of a clique. I suppose if you welcome all sorts you get all sorts and some people do like to use the Gym as an extension of their bathroom. What some people think of hygienic is not other people's ideal.

Bonny
15-04-2008, 12:05
When babybonny was little we used to go to waterbabies swimming lessons and they were realy strict - all children had to have a disposable swim nappy on and then tight fitting swim pants over the top to make sure any 'accidents' if they did occur, didn't leak into the water. We were told that if the water was contaminated with excriment then the pool would have to be drained, cleaned and re-filled (taking around 24 hours).

The levels of chlorine required in swimming pools in the UK is much higher than on the continent because so many people in the UK do not shower beforegetting in the pool so all the sweat, dirt, grime or whatever is carried into the pool.

The standards of hygiene seem particularly lax if all of what people have posted is true.

EEEEEEW! The thought of poo swimming turns my stomache!

Why don't we all just pay £40 a month to swimming in the sewers!

I've hardly been swimming since an incident I witnessed at Hillsborough Leisure pool. A young lad threw up in the water (ble!) and all the lifeguards did was scoop the floating bits out and turned the waves on!!!

No wonder Madonna bought next doors house and turned it into a gym.

Think about it, if you went for a swim would you scrub your body down with soap and hot water before you went in? Would having itchy toes stop you? Or being on a period? Then when you're in the pool, what happens when you get water up your nose and it gets snotty?

And that's just everyday people with normal hygiene. What about the dirty tramps who never wash their backsides?

Thank god I don't use the pool.

My big gripe with Virgin is the music being too loud in the gym. Sometimes I go in at 7am and it's full blast ! They could at least keep it low until maybe 9 or 10am, but first thing in the morning ??? It's not as if it's great music either. Half the people are not particularly youngsters (like myself) and the other half have personal players althtough it must need to be turned up high to combat the gym music. I try and listen to the TV's on head phones but it's a battle against the loud music AND the music for the speed cyclists in the corner with the instructor shouting over a loud speaker.

I've asked attendants (that's when they are around), to turn it down many times but what they do is go into the cupboard where the hi-fi control is and turn it slightly down. But as you walk away, they turn it back up. I reckon it's only on for the staff, not the members. I've even informed reception but they said they need it loud so 'they' can hear it as a rule of the club ! Rule ?

It's so annoying, it's worth jacking in my membership. They just ignore you.

I have to agree with the levels of cleanliness at Virgin. We've been members for 4 years and when we joined we'd regularly see the gym stuff being wiped donw - in fact there were signs all over the place asking people to clean stuff after use.

However, perhaps we should complain to Virgin rather than on here?!

Hmmmmm.... hands up if you think this new person works for Virgin! They're not doing much for membership if they do - I wouldn't join a gym where the staff thought it was O.K. to leave poo lying around on the side of the pool in the first place and then insults anyone who dares say otherwise!

Getting back to the original reason for the post, I used to attend an evening ladies session at Aston pool. Several weeks ago turned up to find it closed as a child from a morning school group had become unwell and had been sick in the pool . The attendant explained that on such occasions the pool has to be cleaned, treated and then closed for a specific number of hours for the treatment to work. Would seem that Virgin are not doing this ??

If you read the thread, there are lots of criticisms on here regarding the hygiene/cleanliness. It's up to Virgin to address these, if they wish customers to remain. I have other gripes: security - stuff nicked, the wind tunnel factor, when you come out of the pool into the changing rooms, that I was always told "was being addressed". I am no longer a member and have no intentions of returning.

Hey Diva,
All the stuff you just said about virgin just amazes me coz we ceased our membership about 3 years ago and all the stuff you mentioned was happening back then. - stuff nicked, freezing pool, freezing changing rooms, steam room slime all under the tiled seating coz not cleaned properly. The food in cafe was sent back several times til we just stopped using it.

the thing is I was going shortly after it just opened and all the same probs are still there! On finding stuff in the pool - the staff told us it needed to be shut down and cleaned out properly when this happened but it never was coz they didn't want the pool closed coz it looks bad. I know its all about give and take but I think for the money thay charge its all a bit shabby

If you're a member complain - send this thread to virgin sheff and head office - dont put up with it, get together and get em to sort it.

If a member shyted at Esporta in the pool area or not I would be out like a shot.

I can understand as to why people would not want to join. You want to go somewhere where you dont have to worry about thinking "oh is the pool area going to be clea or not or has someone shyted near or in the pool area".

It was hovering in the deep-end, 1 metre above the bottom (of the pool) where the water was relatively still. I'm quite short-sighted, and so I didn't know what it was until I was pretty close. Ive always found the staff to be very nice and helpful, extremely friendly and they go out of their way to help people.
You just want summat to moan about.
The creche is an excellent place, the staff sit , play, sing with the little uns(I have sat in there with them on several occassions)some babies don`t settle(mine was one of them) they persevered for ages before calling me, but I didn`t have a problem going and getting him because I am his mum.

Oh here we go slagging off other people's parenting to get the upper hand, what a joke!!

I think paying nearly £50.00 p/mnth you have the right to expect sh** to be cleaned out of a pool properly.

I don't mind getting my daughter from the creche but why should I pay not only for gym membership but for the creche when they are so concerned with the baby babies that the older ones, ie mine are left to own devices, they were fine with her until she started being a bit more demanding on time, probably because I don't allow tv so (and it's not all the staff by the way, some are superb) when they are settling the tiny babies & she is not big enough for the next room she gets bored & noone is playing with her so she cries for lack of attention & they call me out, considering it takes me half an hour to get there & back I'm in the gym 20 mins before i get called out it's not worth me going.

And before you have a pop about it must be how I've raised her, being such a crap parent that I obviously mind getting her and all, she goes to a nursery 2 days per week and loves it, goes to play barns with me & loves them, yet hates the creche. So I'm not gonna perservere & cause her distress just so people don't think I want to moan!

Now don't get me wrong I love going to the gym but a couple oftimes I've asked for assistance with something & one bloke could barely keep the smirk from his face & I had just started & never been to one before & I also saw 2 of the staff laughing at a fat girl which is totally unacceptable, that fat girl was not me before you start!! Lol

I used to be a member of Virgins but no more - you see the fundamental fault with Virgins is that they seem to think that they can continue to rope people in with expensive memberships and very difficult get out clauses while at the same time not willing to invest in the facilities and the cleaning and all the other staff that it must surely take to run such a large leisure complex - I bet Richard Branson is swimming in his big private pool somewhere having a big laugh at all the suckers he has conned in as they swim about in their own ex******* trying to look hip and fit ...

Well at least his own pool will have a big turd floating round in it just like the pool in Heeley ;)

i think they call that endurance or long distance training

well I don't have the patience for all their endurance!!

I thought they were to get twice the workout in half the time, I suppose
it's not really the folk on them it's that the instructors get different machines in the place then fit them into everyone's workout going on about how great they and give the best results which then means everyone's waiting for them & on them a while and when you're on short time frame you don't get the workout that is programmed for you & therefore not the results you want.

Incidentally does anyone know where else has these machines, or more of them without the queues?

Esporta is dingey and dark and reminded me of a crap pub when I had a free trial there.... Virgin isn't perfect but where is..? I think the staff are friendly and the manager always has time to listen to any comments or concerns we have. The club is huge and once the January rush is over with I never have a problem getting on the machines I want to use. The spa is fantastic :D

I still think its the best health club in sheffield, having tried most of the other big ones.

Have cancelled Virgin and joined Esporta. Definitely much more relaxed, cleaner etc at Esporta. Feel that Virgin currently has some unique problems.

the reason you dont queue at esporta is so quiet and this is because it is a second rate gym. just think, if it was a successful gym, it would be busy!!!!!!!!!!
I saw their sales people at Currys the other week trying to sell their facility on the pretence that is quiet....great sales technique...our place is quiet because no one goes.....please!!!

Dont get me wrong, if you are looking for a quiet gym with no atmosphere or energy then esporta may be the gym for you

I've been to both and Esporta is far better than Virgin in my opinion.

The equitment is better and newer the saff more friendly its claener you never have to que and the members are friendly too.

Whenever I go the atmosphere is great too.

Lol no infact to be honest I left a while back as although I liked it I thought paying nearly £60 a month was taking the p*ss.

However I still think it is the best in Sheffield all be it over priced.

I joined fitness first next door cause although nowhere near as nice as Esporta or Virgin for that matter it does what it says on the tin ie provides an area to work out which is all i require as when ever the weather is good enough prefer to be outside on the bike or running.
