Hi, i was wondering if someone could help.

I recently purchased a official xbox 360 HDMI cable but when i got home i realised my 360 doesn't have a HDMI port (Doh!) so i was wondering if anyone knows if any adaptors are available.

Thanks

dont think there are adapters. you can "upscale" your 360 to 1080p by the normal setting but it wont be "true" (hate that term) HD...

take the lead back and get a refund

Microsoft started making 360 premiums with dhmi ports from around august 2007 so unfortunately if you bought yours before that period then you wont be able to use the hdmi cable.

Thanks for everyone's help, i guess i'll just have to get a refund or invent the adaptor myself :hihi:

Thanks again

Not sure if they have distribution over there, but Madcatz (www.madcatz.com) has just released the HDMI conversion kit. This unit simply plugs into the back of older units without a HDMI port.

In fact, here's the link: http://madcatz.com/Default.asp?Page=411&CategoryImg=Xbox_360_Accessories

I already have an 1080p tv and was under the impression if i used an hdmi cable (with my xbox settings being at 1080p mode) it would be even better quality, is this not the case or am i just being a complete dummy when it comes to 480p/720p/1080i/1080p?

Thats false, they use the component video signal (which comes from the standard port, which is 1080p compliant) and convert it to a hdmi signal, so you do get 1080p HD, sure its not 100% perfect comparing to hdmi built in the unit, but its not a con by far.

There is a component cable available for older Xbox360s, that's if your HDTV has component inputs (coloured Red, Green and Blue) of course. Mine works very well at 720p.

HDTVs have a fixed number of pixels in which to display a picture. Most HDTVs under 40 inches have a resolution something like 1280x720. Any 1080p picture will usually be downscaled back to 720p to fit on the screen.

Unless your TV is actually capable of displaying a true 1080p (1920×1080) picture, there's not really any point in going over 720p.

It's best to check your TV's manual to see what your screen's maximum resolution is.

But it is a con they make you believe your gonna get a better picture where as you get just the same by using the high def av kit or scart kit

I did the same thing a while back.

Paid £12.99 for ah HDMI lead on Game's web site, recieved it, then I realised my 360 doesn't have HDMI! :loopy:

Wasted 13 flippin' quid on a lead?! Fortunately they were pretty good about getting a refund on it when I took it to Game down Town.

no you dont, you would get the same if they used the s-video or composite, but they use the component signal, which is HD, it just converts the composite signals to a digital HDMI.

Hmm, not sure about that. Converting analogue to digital will lose some quality, especially when the analogue to digital conversion is done by a £50 device by "madcatz" (no offence but it's hardly a brand that inspires confidence).

The vast majority of games don't even output at proper 1080p, they are just upscaled (the last time I checked there was just 3 games that used 1080p). So the vast majority of games will look worse by sending it through a cheap conversion unit than keeping the analogue signal. And as someone said above; most TVs <40" don't output 1080p anyway, in which case even games that are 1080p will look worse as they will be upscaled, run through a cheap analogue > digital convertor then downscaled again by the tv.

All this talk is rather silly anyway. The cost of the unit is around £50, you'd be far better selling your old style (none-HDMI) Xbox 360 on e-bay and putting the £50 towards a new one (with HDMI) which will probably come with some "free" games included with the added bonus of resetting the warranty (something not to be sniffed at when it comes to 360s tbh).

yes, converting analogue to digital will have SOME quality loss, but its still a HD signal (not analogue none hd, to hdmi) which is what carpetviper was saying..

Sure, component can do 1080p it's just that most tv's won't accept 1080p over component, so yeah you won't lose definition. I'm still to be convinced that the madcatz thing is the answer to the problem though (I'd definitely want to see some comparison shots or read a couple of reviews before I forked out money for it).

Edit: not that I'm planning on buying one anyway, I just meant if I was... my 360 has HDMI :P

I thought it didn't make any difference whatsoever if the xbox was connected via HDMI or component to be honest, or at least i couldnt tell.

Also, i was led to believe via the AV forums that games consoles only convert or play to 1080i and not 1080p ?
