Josh has smelly ears. There is no sign of ear wax, none of that nasty brown stuff, his ears are normal colour and not inflamed, just smelly. If it doesnt clear I am having him to vets but obviously would prefer to avoid the trauma - he hates the vets! Any ideas about this.:help:

Could be lots of things is he scratching them ? i would try some cleaning ear drops from a pet supplies and if it doesn't help i would have him to the vets whether he likes it or not.

i was told to get some herbal ear drops from the pet shop, for mine when they get smelly ears, worth a try before a trip to the vets.

If there is no dirt, inflamation or discharge of any kind then I wouldnt worry too much, some dogs just have smelly ears. Are they dropped or erect ears as this will make a difference to the smelly factor. Are they hairy ears inside?

He is a gsd and his ears are upright and relatively hair free, he is not scratching or shaking head, he just stinks a bit. He had an ear infection the other year and its smells similar, think I'll get some ear cleaner, give it a couple of days and then drag him down to vets if no better. Thanks:)

Thornit Canker Powder is good for keeping dogs ears clean and stops them smelling,I don't know if it is sold in pet stores but the address on the container is Miss P Bett.

I have used it once a month for years on my GSD's and have no trouble at all with their ears.

There may be inflammation down nearer the eardrum. If you get drops make sure you get PH neutral ones as the acid in. Do not use something like Aurizon or Otimax and dont use Epi Otic cleaner as all of those aren't PH neutral. It's worse than putting lemon juice on a raw wound for us if you use those on a dog with an inflamed ear.

Our Merlin has a ruptured eardrum at the moment with a Pseudamona aueruginosa. He's had 2 GA's now and is being referred to a speciailist in Manchester to help him as the usual medications that are meant to kill it haven't done so and we need to prevent him from going deaf.

Yes I remember my vet telling me about some of the brands you can buy over the counter being acid based and can cause further problems. I think you may be right that this is a deeper rooted lingering infection, vets it is:|
