View Full Version : Recycle bin icon - how do I move it somewhere else?

As per thread title.

I've suddenly decided to go all anal with my new TFT monitor and move all icons into my toolbar - so now I have a very 'zen like' image on my desktop - and an annoying recycle bin which refuses to go away.

Any ideas how to move it?

No idea how to move it, but I've just succeeded in making mine go away entirely.

LOL.

Intentionally? or were you playing to try and find a solution to my problem?

I was trying to make it reappear elsewhere, but that bit hasn't worked.

Try your recycle bin.

Oh. Yeah. Umm.

There might be a way of doing it but I'm not sure off the top of my head, although seing as you can;t actually find a folder called 'recycle' bin in your computer then maybe not. But I wonder if you could use a transparent .gif image as the icon (instead of the pic of the recycle bin).

But then wouldn't it just say 'Recycle bin' on my desktop?

You can rename it to '.' too.

But then wouldn't I just have a dot on my screen? :hihi:

If I could make the dot black, we might have a deal here. :)

Well if that works thenmaybe you could do something with the font...

Why not just remove it from your desktop, its in Windows Explorer as standard any ways, and a shortcut can be created on your start menu etc...

It doesn't have delete or remove as an option.

go to your desktop properties, (right click > properties) (not using XP I cannot remember exactly where it is but) there's a "Customise Desktop" button in there on one of the tabs, this will allow you to choose the icons that show on your desktop, just untick recycle bin.

Nope.

My Documents, My computer and My network places,

But no recycle bin option.

No recycle bin isn't on there mate your options are 'my computer', 'my docs', 'network places' and possibly 'internet explorer'

Oh... I was sure it was there... its there in Vista atleast... oh well

Try this trick then..

- Open Registry Editor. (Start > Run > "regedit" > ok)

- In Registry Editor, navigate to the following registry key:
-- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
--

- Find the following key: {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

- Delete that key

There is no need to reboot. Just wait a few seconds and see how the icon disappears from the desktop.

Just recreate the key to put it back... (or back up by exporting first)

XP professional.

Go to START > RUN

Type GPEDIT.MSC

Navagate to USER CONFIGURATION >ADMINISTRATIVE TEMPLATES >Click on DESKTOP,

On the right hand pane find " Remove Recycle Bin icon on the desktop " , double left click on it to ENABLE it.

You can still delete as before (or hold shift and the del key to delete permanently) and if you need to empty the recycle bin go to mycomputer then right click on c: and click properties then disk cleanup and select the recycle bin as one of the folders to clear.

Just remember that you did this if you ever download anything to your desktop, or put anything on there 'temp' as they wont show until you re-show desktop icons..

thats why I didn't suggest this method as that has caught me (and many others) out before.
