View Full Version : My kitten is driving me mad
I have had kittens before but this one, is a little devil.
She is 5 months old. We have had to cover the swing bin in the kitchen, she even gets up the cover and in the bin.
She fights with your ankles and feet whenever you move, in fact you don`t have to move she just flies at them for no reason.
My daughter`s hands are covered with scratches with playing with her.
We have a scratch post and loads of toys and people to play with her, but I need help with her jumping at guests and bitting at feet.
Any suggestions?
Has it got quite a bit of meat on it?
If so, best use for it would be a good old kitten stew, just be sure to skin it, and remove teeth.
I only had male cats before I got a female one - males are much more laid back IMO.
My female cat is highly strung to say the least and as a kitten displayed similar behaviour to what you have described. We just stuck with her and gave her treats to encourage her to behave - she seems to like my son best and he has never had any problems with her.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Good luck!
Sounds like she could be bored.....
I know it's unlikely and you're obviously keeping her occupied, but I'd go for either boredom or something frustrating her / stressing her out.
They also pick up on 'atmosphere' and such, so if there's been a change in behaviours around the house that soemtiems kicks them off. Jarvis, numero - uno cat at The Towers, is VERY easily rattled by anything that happens to us in the house.
Also, sometimes paying attention to her when she's acting out may make the situation worse - she'll associate her behaviours with getting attention. Maybe spend time with her when she's quiet as well as when she's boisterous?

Any suggestions? my cat was like that attacking the ankles and feet when he was a young cat we were advised to have him neutered and this made him less aggresive if its a she cat i think it is called speying if its not been done this could help , my cat now 13 year old does still sometimes attack the ankles eg if we play with him and he gets mad he will run at you attack your ankles and run off in temper also has sometimes done this if he thinks you are going to tread on him and he feels threatened if your cat has not been speyed and you have her done im sure this problem will settle down as it gets older
pretty_polly 22-03-2005, 13:39 My cat does this and has done ever since she was a kitten, it's a way of her playing and wanting me to play with her. Nothing harmful about it. She will grow out (not completley) of it as mine has she doesn't do it that often now she has grown up a bit.
Keep playing with her, and get her to use the scratching post as often as possible. She will learn - just a case of teaching her!!
Let us know how you get on.
cgksheff 22-03-2005, 13:49 You can also make life a little easier by keeping her claws trimmed.
Only do this if you are confident that you know what you are doing.
Maybe get the vet to show you the first time.

If she has a scratching post, fit something abrasive to it for self-trimming claws...
Or failing that, read the manual (http://dansdata.com/kitten.htm) :P
Crayfish 22-03-2005, 16:49 Blimey, my cats must be incredibly well behaved looking at all these experiences. They'll put up with more or less anything, if they don't like something they just run away. (Well two of them, grandma cat can be temperamental)
Even she never attacks without justification though - maybe its because i have a small dog who regularly asserts herself as top animal!
I remember when my two were Kittens.. 14 years later they are still as playful.. granted they didn't bite or jump on the guests :hihi:
Sounds like she is just a playful little thing.. Is she breaking the skin when biting ? Mine never used to break skin, was just play biting..
I was pleased to hear today that one of mine pulled through her operation (after a lengthy illness) and was on her way home this afternoon, can't wait to see her tomorrow
Look here for what we have had to put up with for three years.

The face says it all, doesn't it.:(
My pussy is deaf so she miows ridiculously loudly. And I mean loud.
Now that really does drive you mad, especially when she starts her usual screaming session on a Saturday morning!
zerocool 24-03-2005, 17:44 Our kitten is the same, she's 7 months old now, and after having her spayed, nails trimmed and being allowed outside she is finally burning of her energy. We assumed she was bored and fed up of being in the house.
We find her attacking bits of us that don't have any meat, i.e. ankles, elbows, hands etc, and she attacks our dog as well, by pretending to hug him around the neck then biting his neck! She is really evil.
She never purrs, only growls and gurgles. She only comes for a cuddle when SHE wants too!
I'd recommend getting her outside ASAP, if you can, obviously after spaying and injections, then waiting 3 weeks ish until scar is healed. Our cat is better for it now, and is much calmer.
