Grease..........

I've gone through phases with the film version of Grease.

I recall it being all the talk in 1978 upon its release but due to the certificate I was too young to see it (hard to believe such censorship nowadays). The queues to see it in Sheffield were incredible (and of course it was all the talk at school regarding John Revolting and Olivia Neutron Bomb, ha! ha! And whilst we're at it, who can recall Arthur Mullard's version of You're The One That I Want?).

It was then on TV over Christmas 1982 and I fell in love with the film then. It made me want to be grown up (I was 13) and then I recorded it off ITV in 1987 and watched it nearly every other night. (I think I've seen it over 50 times now.)

I went and got myself a D.A. hairdo like Danny's, learned all the songs on guitar and even - wait for this - bought some pink socks like Danny wore in the dance sequence part of the film!!!

And the truth is, it's still a cracking film with a wonderful soundtrack. Every generation seems to be affected by Grease and that says it all.

Okay, so I've ditched the pink socks (and the D.A. washed out after three days) but I still love Grease.

(PS. Continuity error in the gym. During the Blue Moon scene where the T Birds drop their trollies, it suddenly goes dark. Prior to this the dance off has been in daylight and there are no curtains at the gym windows.)

I have a strong dislike for Grease. I first watched it when I was about 6 (I suppose at that age I didn't understand it, but I thought it was such a grown up film; I watched it at a friends house who was a good 5 years older than me). I've watched it pleanty of times since and I simply don't like it. I've no logical reason for it, I just can't enjoy it.

And Ousetunes, pink socks, really :hihi:

I think the best one is South Park.

The correct amount of vulgarity and tunefullness.

Think my favourite musicals are Carousel and Les Mis - both real tearjerkers!

Sound Of Music is up there with the best of them, you can't leave that out. Oliver is also catchy enough to still be good all these years later, although i have more respect for Rodgers and Hammerstein than i do for Lionel Bart.

Saying all this, and i didn't love the movie, but Sondheim does some clever things in the music for Sweeny Todd.

For me it's a toss up between Joseph and his amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Hairspray or Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.

Hairspray I haven't seen live (yet) but I promise I will go and see it, in London, at some point (If only it wasn't £50 a ticket plus booking fee, and that's just for the "cheap" seats).

Joseph and his amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
I had that on tape when i was a kid and loved it, but as i get older i hate Andrew Lloyd Webber's face more and more.

I love 'Grease', though I think the last time I saw the stage version was before a few of the big songs from the film were added.

John Travolta was gorgeous (what happened?!), Olivia Newton John was stunning (who else attempted to squeeze into a tiny pair of skin tight satin trousers after seeing the film?) and the songs are perfect karaoke material. What's not to like?

I adored Rent and I'm heavily hooked on Wicked too :)
Rent is gritty, tearjearking but funky music and excellent energy in live performance, rather than DVD, though that's good too.
WIcked is pre WIzrd Of Oz and much much better and far less cheesy. Unusual musical style but still riotously great :)

Agreed. I was amazed when I first saw it that it is actually a great musical, and not just an extended episode of the series.

Nah, I'd be better as Meatloaf, I know most of his songs off by heart, and I wouldn't need much padding to emulate his big belly! :(

I hate musicals...I find it cringeworthy when people suddenly burst into song.

The only exceptions are humerous musicals like Little Shop Of Horrors (I'm sure I've been to that dentist :o), Rocky Horror Show and Blues Brothers

The musical that I have found my favorite out of: The Wedding Singer, Blood Brothers, Grease, Footloose, is Blood Brothers. It is amazing and I have seen it three times in the past 2 years. I will most likely see it many times more.
Although there are many that i haven't and would like to see such as Avenue Q, Oliver, and a few more.

I just watched the remake of Hairspray on Sky... Brilliant! I so want to see the Stage version, but I refuse on principle to pay £60 a ticket for 3 of us (me, Mum and Dad) just cos it's in the ruddy West End.. Why can't they bring something like it up to the Lyceum in Sheffield? I even hear the Crucible's due to re-open soon.
