View Full Version : Traffic getting into Sheffield!!

I live in Ecclesfield and work in the city centre.. and the last few days the traffic has been a nightmare!! It took me 50 minutes to travel the 5 miles this morning!

I normally go via Barnsley Rd or Shirecliffe.. I know there's some road works at the bottom of Rutland Rd, is that what's causing it all? If so, what are they doing and when will it be cleared up?!

It's impossible to even think about going via Penistone Rd after 7.30am.. Also, my trip home (anytime between 3.30 and 6pm!) takes just as long.. 50 minutes, argh!!!!!

Does anyone know what was going on this morning near Ecclesall Road? Traffic was crawling, fire engines flying around, but i didn't see anything from the bus on the way into town. Clues anyone?

It was raining this morning. You should know that when it rains everything grinds to a halt.

I once walked into town from Ecclesfield. Took me almost two hours, not 50 minutes.

I hate to criticise a fellow poster ( Andy 78) but the Ecclesall Road jam was nothing to do with difficulties from ecclesfield.
I understand that the Ecclesall Road snarl up was caused by an accident on Clarkhouse Road which forced traffic down to Ecclesall Road.

Ahh that explains things. I posted on this thread because I didn't want to start a very similar thread as well.

Strange though, because the fire engines were travelling down Eccy road from the Hunters Bar roundabout. Maybe they were trying to cut down Collegiate Crescent or something.

So if you cycled in then it would take you less than 30 minutes.

It used to take me about 15-20.

In response to Andy78 (sorry - don't know how to copy your message into my reply..!)

There was a taxi broken down in the left hand lane of the roundabout about 7.30am at the bottom of Eccleshall Rd (the lane to turn left into Hanover Way). Its wheel had come off - looked like the whole thing had collapsed somehow. Reading other peoples messages about an accident, I doubt the taxi was the reason for the fire engines, but it was definitely holding traffic up in the left lane for a while.

It does make sense that the two incidents combined caused the crawling traffic problems.

PS, Welcome to the forum. :)

The only solution is to expand Supertram. I love Supertram and I would use it all the time if I lived and worked on the route.

Talking of jams, I had to do a one-off car journey from Dronfield to Wadsley Bridge at 8.15am the other day.

I never expected that it would take me 1 hour 10 minutes.

I think it was last year that plans to extend the tram route up past broomhill for example, were scrapped. Apparently they had sent out some surveys and the public consensus was that the disruption was too much. Once again, people standing in the way of progress because they don't like having some inconvenience.

Having said that, I don't know a single person who lives near the proposed route that received the previously mentioned public survey.

Have you tried taking the bus? I've started taken it for the same reasons as you.

Thanks to those bus lanes out of the city centre, it's actually quicker than taking the car, and much less stressful.

Sadly true.

S10 were offered it but didn't want it; S5 wanted it but can't have it.

Then we should build the short extensions underground. We now have the Chunnel drilling technology.

If only that were feasible. I don't think Sheffield's budget would stretch to that cost. It would be a great solution though.

Indeed. Herries Road would be an ideal extension for the tram, but it would have to get through the traffic nightmare that is Leppings Lane and Parkside Road, unless they put it along Penistone.

I would love having the tram going past. Beats the dodgy bus service we get up here!
