Just heard on the news that some water companies are thinking of applying for a hose pipe ban, is this the first of the year, and if so has it become an annual event a bit like the first cuckoo.

Funny how they never forget to send out their increased bills every year (the water companies not the cuckoo's, Kirky)

It's something to do with the lack of rain fall apparently.

Btw - Owdlad got in first with his thread ;)

It seems stupid. I had to check the date when I saw it, thought it might be April 1st.

I can`t remember it being the driest winter for ages either.

My friend phoned last night and said a weather man had said it was one of the hottest summers last year we had.

Are these people on this planet ?

How can we have a lack of water ?

BBC - "Some reservoirs are just 56% full, compared with a usual 95% for this time of year."

They were full, 'til Yorkshire Water hit that pipe at Malin Bridge.

It's a ridiculous situation to be banning hose pipes at this stage. If they are that worried maybe they should start closing down car washes first.

I'll be buying a new 200 gallon watering can soon anyway

I read the water companies are requesting the hose pipe ban because we had a very dry winter.

Err, weren't we under several inches of snow at one point?

And aren't we an island? Surrounded by billions of gallons of the stuff? :loopy:

Well if it's the same as usual, it'll e based on the south-east, which is bloody boiling at the moment! London was like blimmin July on the march on Saturday.

Maybe they should start selling thinner hose pipes that'll make the water last longer... :heyhey:

the problem is how we rely on rainfall... we're a tiny little around, we're surrounded by water... why not set up a few desalitation plants for a "just in case" scenario... instead of having water shortages? :P

I'm also quite sure that when I returned from my holidays last year, at the end of August, it rained incessantly every single day, non-stop right up till Christmas.

Also, as Abdul rightly points out, we've recently had a ton of snow and as I type guess what? Yes, there's watery fluid falling from the heavens.

Hose pipe ban? If that's necessary then one can only deduce that the Water Companies - and not us - have been wasting the water that we've had in the last six or seven months.

It is obvious that the water companies should be charged with gross incompetence and that if such a foolish ban is implemented, we should stop paying our bills.

Incidentally, isn't it funny that Fatty Prescott wants to build more homes in the South East where the water supplies can't cope with the homes that are already there. The SE suffers more draught restrictions than the rest of us put together!!

I was at Ladybower yesterday afternoon, the water is about a metre below the bridge near the Ladybower Inn...that was a nice pint!

Just wondered if anyone on here has got a water butt (that collects rain water from the gutters) We got one last week and the rain last night already half filled it. Perhaps if everyone had one and used their hose pipes less, we wouldn't end up with a hose pipe ban.........just a thought.

Because that would eat into the profits of the water companies and upset the shareholders. It's much easier to restrict the water of the consumers - what are they going to do - use another water company in protest?!

Another problem is that we don't have enough reservoirs. Most were built at the start of the 1900's with the water consumption of that era in mind.
