I thought it was probably someone else. Although some of the teachers may have been there at your time the best I remember were Miss Jepson, Mrs Armitage, Miss Spendlove, Mrs Harris, Mrs Stones, Mr Taylor (gulp).

I went to that school 1956-60 The head at that time was Mr Aizlewood, had a son called Martin, I remember all(?) of the teachers from that time!! Most of the pupils in my form, Barbara Fletcher, Christine Monks Christine Jackson, Pauline Thorpe Susan Croft, Hazel Chadwick (Miss Hornseys pet!!) Barry Barnes, Brian Boulby, Tina Cullen Dian Smith, Elaine Gibbs, the Gascoigne twins etc etc!!! often wonder how they' and the others have done. Like me they will be in thier 60's now!!!!

Hello Wendy. Not been on the Forum long and just seen your thread. I was at Greystones and left in 1959, so a bit before you. Carol Whiting was my cousin and she had a brother called David. Her dad, my uncle Bernard used to keep the Vine on Hodgson Street. My best mate at the time was Christine Marsh and she used to live opposite in the end house on Hodgson street. Long gone now, like a lot of the Sheffield I used to know and love.

Christine Marsh was in my class if memory serves me right. She went on the school trip to Switzerland. I also remember Kathleen Fowler

Hi Hetty. Must be another Christine Marsh. There is no way Christines mum would have been able to afford the trip to Switzerland. She was a single parent with six kids and to be kind, not very well off. Munch and me had some great times though. Las time I saw her was about 1975. I lived on Fentonville Street at the time and was working behind the bar in the Cross Guns.

Me again. Forgot to mention Kath Fowler was probably in your year if you left in 1960. I know she was a year younger than Chris and me. Do you remember a Joan Clark who used to go to Greystones and lived on Angus Square or Daniel Cocking who lived on Angus Terrace I think. They were both in my year.

Hi katedave. God, That's a blast from the past. What form were you in? I was also in Mrs Harrison's class but I don't remember your name. She made me sit right at the front of the class next to Francis Fairbrother, he was always playing pocket billiards. Dirty little tyke. I used to go out with Dougie Stevenson. He was mates with Derek Marriott. We used to knock about together. Do you remember Christine Marsh and Kath Fowler. Kath was a year younger than me. I remember Joan Titman, she certainly lived up to her name. She was head girl and she knocked about with Arlene Richardson if you remember. Once had a row with Mrs Harrison. Joan Titman (teachers pet), Arlene Richardson and me forgot our homework and she wanted to put me in detention but was only going to give the other two lines so I refused to do the detention unless they did it as well. Needless to say I got the lines instead. Did you go up from St.Silas? I went from Pomona Street. My name was Janet Whiting back then. I remember Brian Fowden's name. Nice to be in touch though. Thanks for the memories.

Hi Hetty back again yes once again you have jogged my memory i remember mr Grenville,mr Wragg,mr Renshaw, mr Newton & mr Turley plus the head mr Aizlewood i remember " you laddie" very well plus he always took a run up when administering the slipper outside his office in the coridder i think i was a regular visitor to his office for that exercise i believe he started out as a six footer until i arrived at Greystones all that running with the slipper wore him down to around 5ft 6in Paul Mangle was a very big friend of mine but lost contact with him in the 70s and would love to get back in contact if anyone could give me any information his brother Eric was better known for some other issues which i wont name on web sites like you i also hated school even more so the last term my birthday fell in the summer months so i could not leave until mid summer when most of my school mates left at easter then all got into instant work earning cash while i was still at school needless to say the word WAGGING comes to the front of my mind do you also remember Pamela Clark & Jean Hancock they were big friends with each other just like they were joined by a piece of elastic Twing & Twang i used to call them.

Hi katedave, nice to hear from you. I'm sorry I don't remember you, but if you were shy that's probably why. Dougie was a right little scrapper but good fun. He could sing too. I seem to remember someone saying he went training to be a jockey when he left school but I don't know how true that is. Yes, there was a gang of us who used to go to Encks at dinnertime to swing in the tree tops. We also used to stop at the railings on Bingham Park Road for a crafty fag. You must be one of the few who liked old Aizlewood. I really hated that man. Mind you, I was forever on his radar.

Hi Dave, Just reading about you and Kath, naughty naughty. I'm sure our paths must have crossed but I've racked my brains and I still can't remember. It must be the old age thing. Kath and me used to knock about together for a while. She's still around. Have seen her mentioned on the Forum. Malcom Simpson's name is familiar but I can't put a face to him. Take care, Jan

Hi Jack, just been replying to katedave and saw your reply to Hetty. Dave seems to think Aizlewood was a lovely man. Must have been another Aizledwood. Your memories of him are the same as mine. UGH!!! I do remember most of the teachers though. Liked Mr Grenville. When we first went up to Greystones he took 3B until we were all sorted into forms, then he took us for history. Mr Wragg was lovely, think he took us for maths. I was in his 11+ class at Pomona Street. Couldn't stand the sight of McDonald and Morgan wasn't much better. I do remember all the girls were mad on Mr Turley the art teacher. You've probably guessed by now, I also hated school.

Hi Janber i dont know if you were in the same year as myself what i do remember is that on my last day of school a few of the previous years pupils came up to cause trouble i remember the school bell being stolen from out of the bell tower and taken down to Endcliffe park and hung from a tree for a while until it was thrown into the boating pond also mr Grenville's car tyres were let down outside the science classroom you mentioned mr Roy Turley OBE he was my favorite teacher ( sports ) he got his OBE for services to teaching in the Norfolk area he also played for Sheffield's no 1 club the BLADES for a while i was at an age when the only thing that fascinated me at school was miss Hornsby's breasts i seem to think i was sent to Aizlewood for the slipper more times than i can remember for staring at her bosom i wouldnt call it DAY DREAMING more like fantasizing i too loved playing Doctors & Nurses but my Nurses were Linda Batty, Elaine Dewsnap & Gloria Bailey HAPPY DAYS  .

Hi Jack. I left Christmas 1959. Was in Mrs Harrisons class at the time. I remember we were the first year to be banned from having a fourth year party as previous years had. We were very disgruntled to put it mildly. Quite a few of the class still took records though and persuaded me to fetch my record player at lunchtime. Always up for a bit of a rebellion I fetched it and of course, as was normal I was the only one who got hauled over the coals for disobeying. I didn't care. I'd already got a reputation for being bolshy (unfounded I may add) and I was leaving anyway so what the hell!! Old Aizelwood never even gave me my last leaving report.
Mr Turley took us for Art. I didn't know he had played for the BLADES. Definitely Sheffields No.1 Club. Do you remember Derek Pace, goalie Alan Hodgkinson and was it the Shaw brothers. Not too sure about the last. UP THE BLADES.

Hi Thorpy. I think the Greystones Grammar School you're on about is probably the same as our Secondary Modern. Before Sheffield went comprehensive in 1957. to get to Greystones Sec Mod you had to have something like a b pass on your eleven plus. Not quite good enough for Grammar school. I think in 1957 the old council schools (where you went from start to finish) merged, and the seniors all went to Greystones in our area. We merged with Pomona st., St. Mathias, St. Silas and Carterknowle rd. Hope that helps.

Back again Janber You left Greystones before me the players you mention were my heroes i was there when promotion was gained against Derby night game 60/61 season up to the old 1st division Roy Turley (OBE) signed part time on 20th July 1953 until 30th June 1955 he only played one game against Barnsley on the 26th Oct 1954 in the old County Cup BLADES won 1-0 Graham Shaw was the landlord of the Sportsman Denby st for quite a few years got to know him well Bernard Shaw played for both BLADES & PIGS the great Joe Shaw was not related to the brothers even though i now live in the W/Midlands i am still a season ticket holder and travel up to all the home games UTB.

I think it was 1959 when they were playing Watford we were selling programmes. After I left school I got into other things and football fell by the wayside. I still support their Lottery though.

Just a question though was Mr Brown still the head teacher then?

In the 50's &60's they were 2 seperate schools the infant & junior were both in the Tullibardine road building The secondary school was on the corner of Tulli & Greystones rd,I was there 1955 1962 Mr brown became headmaster during that time he retired in the mid to late 70's whilst my children were there

I attended Greystones from 58 to 62. I then went on to Granville College.
I remember Albert Price, Janice Reed who was in my class in 3rd year. Other names that come to mind are: Sylvia Bolton, Sandra Raynes, Jean Liversidge, Wendy Hudson, Eileen Sygrove also Tina Cullen and Janette Glossop who were in the year above me. Michael Bradshaw (head boy) a year below me.
I enjoyed my 4 years there. The teachers I was most impressed by were Miss Hornsey, Mrs Harrison who was at first our music teacher then became the sewing teacher - Mrs Marsden who taught us Geography. Does anybody remember the young music teacher all the boys were crazy about (I think she was from South Africa) who taught there in 1961/2. Didn't like Mr Grenville thought he was a bit of a bully - spent my life in detention from him.
