I lived on Portland Street and it's sad to see it now, although there are still parts that I still recognise, there are still traces of the old area.
The final nail in the coffin was when I found out last year about Daniel Hill School being demolished, what a waste of a great building.

I had aunts wjo lived at Westmoreland Street during the 50's and 60's .

Another aunt had the corner shop on Daniel Hill and Westmorland Street.

Mum used to take the laundry every Monday to the Public Laundry on Daniel Hill - now there are scenes that probably will never be repeated

I have vague memories of the old Kelvin area before the flats…..keeping hold of the pram walking towards West Don Street. My mother told me that the Sally Army place always did well. She was very proud to be the May Queen in 1952.

Does anyone know the Bennett-Pitts or England family from around there?

How did Kelvin flats get that name? I know a lot of the 'streets' on the block had their names taken from local roads, but was / is there a Kelvin Road / Street etc?

I was one of the last tennants on Kelvin!! There were 3 of us left on the top floor (Edith Walk), me and my daughter and another bloke. I lived there for 8 years and was involved with the clearance programme.

I loved the place and cried when I left. I kept my flat key and sneaked back before they fenced it all off. I went in my flat and the workmen had tipped all my furniture over and made a real mess. I tidied the flat up and sat there for ages. How sad is that eh?!!

I have loads of photos which I did start uploading onto a website. Unfortunatley, life has got in the way so it's got pushed to one side lately. Anyway click HERE (http://www.freewebs.com/kelvinflats/) if you want to see what I started and will aim to finish one day!!!

I lived at 104 Woollen Lane it was opposite the old Philidephia club from when I was born December 1956 to 1963 - cup final day I believe. We were moved to Foxhill like a lot of people from Kelvin and I can remember having to come out our front and only exit door down the street and up the yard to go to our toilet that we shared with next door, we also had a tin bath that hung on a hook in the celler the house we moved into had a inside toilet - how posh we thought at the time and a seperate bathroom sheer bliss

I never lived on Kelvin but worked in the Kelvin day centre for a while and Upperthorpe N/F school. Loved looking at the photo's-certainly brought back memories.
Had friends who lived on the Kelvin in the 80's. Have shown my children the photo's as we live close by and they just cant visualise it being there-the area it covered was so large and was such an imposing building.
Some of the photos as you faced Kelvin from Langsett Rd show masionette type housing to the right hand side on the hill (top side of Wraggies) were these what is now Fox Rd/top side of Burgoyne Rd. Was this the housing before the current estate? was built? Have lived at crookes/walkley since 79 and dont recall this style of housing there only at the Oxford St side-can someone confirm?
Thankyou
mumsy

Leather and Simpsons (BSA agents) were on the bottom end of the Kelvin, nearly opposite the Unity picture house. I remember a friend taking me to someone's house down there (possibly Fox Rd), and he put a new 45 single on his radio-gramophone, it was Palisade's Park by Freddie Cannon. I also knew (what I believed to be) the first resident on the new Kelvin flats, he was a chiropodist called Colin, and I think his flat was next to a lift (or a service lift).

My school pal (at King Ted's) John Hissett lived on Alwyn Street, off Robert Street. He is still around (lives at Wincobank) but his fine parents are long gone. Herbert Hissett worked at the wash-house next to Upperthorpe baths; Dora Hissett was a Girl Guides leader. When the houses were demolished in 1961 they moved to a maisonette on Bramwell Street. Dora's father, a WW1 veteran, lived near them on Alwyn Street; I think he moved to a flat nearby. I well remember the old Leather & Simpson shop - I bought my brand-new BSA Bantam there in 1969, just before they moved to Flora Street.

Kelvin Flats must of been one of the most notorious social housing developments ever, but yet very little is documented about the complex, I know of its graffiti epidemic by Keep Britain Tidy, unfortunately no longer on the net :( Pete's FCS photos and his short story, but after googling several obvious keywords, I can't find anything else documented to do with the flats?

I used to live on Informary Road opposite the cement factory. Was a member of the Salvation Army (didn't know any better) and also went to Philadephia slipper baths on Friday nights. My grandfather had a barbers shop called Aldams. We used to spend our summer days picking tar out of the cobbles on Daniel Hill. Happy days !!! Moved from there when I was 12 in 1961 to Walkley.
Anyone know if Philadelphia school is still there?

Does anyone remember what all of the 'streets' were called? I lived there for two years (83-85) but can't remember the address. Remember great views and constant hot water. Shame that the idea of 'villages in the sky' never really worked.

Does anyone remember what all of the 'streets' were called?...Some or all of them were named after streets that had been there before the flats were built. I remember Portland Walk, Edith Walk, Woollen Walk and Kelvin Walk. You might like to visit this site (http://www.freewebs.com/lifeonkelvinflats/index.htm).

I worked on the Kelvin Project when people were being rehoused, the place was a wonderful mix of people all with a story to tell. When it was first built it was a good place to live ,however the Housing policy that eventually let to anyone spoile the complex. When you look at edward st another complex that is still going strong lessons need to be learnt about social housing

Does anyone remember Mrs Spencer who lived in the flats? A big, cuddly Jamaican, she was "a real character" and the life and soul of the children's ward (Ward 17) the Northern General Hospital when I was a student nurse there in 1969. She was the ward orderly, and all the kids and staff thought the world of her. I don't know exactly where in the flats she lived, but they don't make 'em like that any more. I like to think that, now well into her 80s, she is enjoying a well-earned retirement somewhere, and bringing a little sunshine into the lives of her friends and neighbours..:)

Lived on Portland Walk opposite chinese chippy between 86-88. Used to wheel my motor bike from boiler house end which was ground level to my flat. Couldn't leave it in car park overnight as it certainly would have "walked". Had a plastic pig Reliant Regal 3 wheeler at the time and used to park it elsewhere as the few times I left it in the car park it was used as target practice by the bombers above on Woolen and Edith.

Hope there is someone else out there that remembers the old street. The cobbled road, the lady who made toffee and sold it from her front door, the rag and bone man, the coal man throwing those big sacks of coal down the grate! My mother also used to go to the wash house, the towels used to be like sandpaper, i used to say they were "rusty". We used to go to Mrs Clark's sweetshop, she was a lovely lady.
