You'll need to know the regiment and preferably the batallion he fought with.

For example, my Grandfather fought with the Sherwood Foresters.

Armed with that you could then look at the records held by the regimental museum, and I'm pretty sure that some War Department records are searchable online now, but I'm not sure of the details.

Best of luck.

If he was a Sheffield lad the chances are that we was in the Hallamshire battalion of the Yorks & Lancaster Regiment. Their first battle, in which they were almost destroyed, was on the Somme July 1st 1916. There is a website dedicated to The Hallamashires that contains some information about personnel.

Hi .

You could start by searching the medal rolls at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/medals.asp#medalsindex

If you know his regiment then the pension records are available online at www.ancestry.com. This is a pay to view site but I and others on this forum have a subscription and would search for you if you post his name, number and regiment. Not all soldiers were entitled to a pension, this applied to regular soldiers and not usually conscripts.

I'm afraid without his Army number you are going to have difficulty getting very far. As to which theatre he fought in you can find out which theatres the Yorks and Lancs fought in in WW1 on their website. If you know where he enlisted (ie Sheffield or Barnsley etc) the National Archives may be able to help but the medal records are by far your best starting point, but again there may be half a dozen people of the same name so his number would help.
Good luck with your searches, would be interested to know how you get on.

jessiet,
you really need to download his medal index card from the NA.
On the card there will be the words SWB List or just List with a number. This is his reference to his Silver War Badge(because he was wounded) and the number is the entry in the Rolls.
Also on there you should have his Battalion of the East Yorks in which he served.
With this you should then go to the Great War Forum's mother site the 'Long Long Trail', on there you will get an history of where Harry's Battalion fought during the war.
Good luck,
Dean.

Sheffield Libraries have free access to ancestry.co.uk through the People's Network. You have to register at your local library and there are instructions on what to do. The best place to find out about where regiments and battalions fought is 'The Long Long Trail as previously mentioned.
