Hi all;

Was just wondering if anyone could advise on "nice" areas to rent in Sheffield? I am totally unfamiliar with the city / area, but am interested in relocating there in the future. I am mainly interested in 1 to 2 bedroom apartment complexes or townhouses (flats, I believe they are called there).

I guess I define "nice" as clean, generally modern suburbs, with well maintained streets. Areas serviced by public transport, and close to shopping centers, cinemas, restaurants or pubs are ideal, but not essential. Sheffield seems to get a pretty good wrap for it's parks and greenery. So suburbs with parks or walking tracks would be a bonus. In saying that I know this may mean living more toward the outskirts of town and quite frankly, I do not mind that (after all, I am trying to get AWAY from the hustle and bustle of big city living). Another big characterisitc of a "nice" neighbourhood is of course crime. I have no idea as to the statistics of crime in Sheffield overall, but all cities have their trouble spots, so perhape someone could recommend some areas over others.

If anyone can suggest such a place, perhaps they would also know what a reasonable (weekly) rate would be? Also, is it customary there to put up a bond, or security deposit? Also to pay a certain amount of rent in advance?

I hope I am not been TOO specific, as I realise that one person's definition for the ideal location can greatly differ from someone else's. Basically, I am just looking for somewhere safe and comfortable, with pleasant surroundings.

I would greatly appreciate any information on this topic, and thankyou in advance for your time.

Hi there,

Most people recomment S10, S11 and S7 as good areas which are fairly close to the city centre but also on the right side of town for access to the Peak district. Sheffield has an abbundance of brand new 'city living'appartments' springing up everywhere.

it basically depends what you want. if you are prepared to live a bit further out with a 30 / 40 minute tram or bus ride you can live in some nice semi / rural outskirts but taxi fares can be steep for getting home after a night out on the tiles. Beighton / sothall is a nice commuter area with access to Rother Valley country park, crystal peaks shopping centre with a few restaurants and tram route into town but it is no 'party zone'.

Generally you are looking at paying a months rent in advance as bond. We have just introduced a tennency deposit protection scheme in the Uk similar to the one you have had in OZ for a while.

In terms of rent you get what you pay for, you would get a nice studio or one bed place outskirts of town for maybe £400 pcm plus bills and council tax but city centre i would say a bit more, 2 bed places I think start at about £550 in city centre and luxury places anywhere upwards. Have a look on here and www.rightmove.co.uk for an idea.

Hope it helps a bit.

G'day !!

As has been said the western/southern bits of town are arguably more desirable

Having said that traffic and commuting can be shocking

What will you be doing here and where roughly will you be working or studying?
