Wondered if anyone knew how long budgies live for?

Only asking as I was under the impression they lived for 10 plus years.

I've got three of the little fella's in a very large cage, all fed watered etc correctly, let out to fly now and then.
Got them together when 12 weeks old, they are now 2 and four months, all boy's and all very healthy.

Today I uncovered them to find Fredie dead:o, no appharent cause, pleanty of meat on his little breast and no sign of scaley skin etc.
The two that remain, are now chirrupping away as if nothing happened.

Is it known that budgies suffer unexplained sudden death? or is it they do not live as long as thought?

My budgie died 3 months ago...I was thinking he would go on for at least 10 years but it was 6. He was off colour for about a week the seemed worse...took him to vet on the Wednesday who seemed to think he was underweight but we got antibiotics and on Thursday I felt that he was a bit more lively.....
Friday morning and he was definitely worse, curling up on his feed dish, falling through his perch swing...trying to fly but falling on the floor. I lifted him up on top of his cage, he looked at me and just died.
I havent worked out why yet, he should have been here for a bit longer in my opinion and despite people asking me if I shall get another one, until I can work out why, I won't do....
Sorry about your Freddie though.

Too long. :hihi: My mum had her last one for around 11 years. Now she has another two, a girl and a boy, both around one. They are so annoying!

I don't mind if they become tame, but if they are all timid it just seems pointless!

We have budgies, love birds and doves. Of course birds can just drop dead just like any other living creature can, sometimes there is no explanation. If there is enough space in the cage, food and water than there isn't a problem. If it occurs again then get the vet to check them out that there isn't a contagious illness

Find yourself a specialist poultry vet, though--few vets know how to treat birds, and I've had a couple of vets misprescribe drugs, which ended up killing my birds.

I used to use the Retford Poultry Partnership, but don't know if they treat budgies. Still, I suspect they'd be better than cat-and-dog vets.

Is it still legal to keep canaries?

I used to breed them. They live 8-10 years. I had a 3 year old die for no apparent reason. Which left the hen bird to bring up the chicks on her own which of course she did.
